Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Teddy Sheringham has identified the Spurs winger he hopes to see elevate his game under Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham Hotspur has had a challenging start to the season, with only four points accrued from a possible nine. The team suffered a difficult 2-1 loss to Newcastle United and could only manage a 1-1 draw against Leicester City, leaving the beginning of Postecoglou’s tenure less than ideal.
In the aftermath of the Newcastle defeat, Welsh forward Brennan Johnson emerged as a bright spot. He capitalized on an error by Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope, to level the score for Spurs. Despite a somewhat inconsistent start to his time at Tottenham, Johnson’s performance in this match was encouraging.
Speaking to Football.London, Sheringham expressed his expectations for Johnson in the current season. He pointed out that Johnson has similar attributes to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, suggesting that Johnson should aim for more consistent performances. Sheringham noted that, in his view, Johnson’s second season at the club should show noticeable improvement.
Sheringham also shared his uncertainty about Johnson’s best position, questioning whether he is more effective as a right winger or a center forward. He compared Johnson to Rashford, describing him as a wide player who doesn’t necessarily deliver many crosses into the box, which complicates defining his ideal role on the field.
As Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-Min are the usual starters for Spurs, Johnson will need to make the most of the opportunities he gets from the bench when Postecoglou gives him a chance. Despite Spurs’ disappointing result against Newcastle, Johnson’s speed and skill created additional problems for the opposition, demonstrating his potential impact. While the result wasn’t favorable for Tottenham, Postecoglou would have been encouraged by Johnson’s performance at St James’ Park.
