Tottenham Hotspur could soon have the chance to land a key January transfer target at a reduced price. The player in question, reportedly a long-time Spurs target, has rejected a new contract with his current club, opening the door for a potential move.
Tottenham have already made significant investments this season, with head coach Ange Postecoglou continuing to shape the squad in his own vision following the summer transfer window. The club splashed out approximately £65 million for Dominic Solanke and £40 million for Archie Gray, with other signings like Lucas Bergvall pushing the total expenditure to over £100 million. Despite this, speculation has already begun about further reinforcements during the January window, with reports suggesting that a familiar face might return to North London.
One player heavily linked with a return is Southampton’s full-back, Kyle Walker-Peters. The 27-year-old departed Tottenham four years ago but has since developed into a reliable and consistent performer for Southampton, making 140 league appearances. However, his future at St. Mary’s Stadium is now in doubt, as his contract is set to expire in June 2025, and negotiations over an extension have reportedly stalled.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Walker-Peters had been offered a new contract by Southampton in August, but talks have hit an impasse. “Negotiations have broken down between Kyle Walker-Peters and Southampton,” Romano tweeted. “Southampton had officially offered to extend KWP’s contract back in August, but at this stage, it seems terms are far from being agreed.”
Tottenham might sense an opportunity to bring Walker-Peters back into the fold by negotiating a cut-price deal in January. While Southampton are likely to push to keep him, much could depend on whether a new contract agreement can be reached.
The Saints recently secured a new contract for defender Jan Bednarek, which manager Russell Martin hailed as “massive” for the club. However, Walker-Peters’ situation appears more uncertain. Martin, when asked about the full-back’s future, admitted there’s no clarity at this stage. Speaking to the *Daily Echo*, he said: “He won’t sign a new contract right now. I don’t know if that will change at any point. It is a situation we have to be conscious of. If it’s not going to change, then he needs to give us everything on the pitch, just like Stuey [Armstrong] and Che [Adams] did last year.”
Martin further explained that the decision on Walker-Peters’ future could come down to the club’s ownership. “It will be the owner’s call in January if Saints will cash in on Walker-Peters. It depends on how much he has played by then and his level of performance. It will come down to how he is feeling and how we are feeling. It depends on so much. I can’t give you a definitive answer on that,” he said.
Additionally, Martin emphasized that while Walker-Peters has been an important player for Southampton, his potential departure hinges on whether any clubs make a concrete move for him. “It also depends on who comes in for him and what clubs value him at because nobody has done that in the last three transfer windows. Kyle has been brilliant for us, and while that continues to be the case, it is not a problem at all.”
Should Walker-Peters continue to perform at a high level for Southampton, Tottenham may find themselves in a strong position to negotiate a favorable deal in January. The versatile defender, who can play on either side of the backline, would add valuable depth to Postecoglou’s squad as Spurs look to maintain their momentum through the second half of the season. Whether Walker-Peters returns to the club he once called home will depend on how contract negotiations unfold and whether any suitors step forward in the coming months.
