“AXE LOOMS! Newcastle United Staff Push for Change as ‘Underrated’ Player Fails to Deliver”

Newcastle United is grappling with a troubling reality: far too many of their players are performing well below expectations this season. While Nick Pope and Dan Burn have managed to maintain a level of consistency, the same cannot be said for most of their teammates. The club’s marquee players, who were once seen as vital assets, are struggling to make an impact. For instance, Anthony Gordon appears to be lacking confidence, particularly evident in his lackluster display against Brighton, while Bruno Guimaraes has been noticeably absent in terms of influence on the pitch. Alexander Isak, too, will surely be disappointed with his inability to convert chances into goals, leaving fans and analysts alike questioning the team’s overall effectiveness.

A particularly concerning case is that of Joe Willock. After enduring a dismal 2023/24 season marred by injuries, which limited him to just 14 appearances, there were high hopes for his return this season. Many at Newcastle regarded Willock as akin to a new signing, bringing optimism and potential back to the squad. However, this optimism has quickly turned into frustration. Reports from The Athletic reveal that expectations for Willock’s contributions have not been met, with coaching staff expressing their disappointment in his performances. His struggles on the pitch have raised serious questions about his integration back into the team.

In critical matches, such as the recent loss to Brighton, Willock was expected to be a game-changer, yet he fell short, repeatedly losing possession and failing to assert himself. This disappointing performance further emphasized the challenges he faces in regaining his form. While Sean Longstaff labeled him as Newcastle’s most “underrated” midfielder, Willock has yet to validate that claim. He is a player capable of adding a unique dynamic to Eddie Howe’s lineup, but thus far, he has been unable to distinguish himself amid a collective struggle.

His preferred position on the left of the midfield three is currently occupied by Joelinton, complicating Willock’s path back to form. Howe is faced with a dilemma: he could either drop Joelinton, move him to the left wing, or shift Anthony Gordon to the right—none of which seem viable options given the current team dynamics. This ongoing situation underscores the urgent need for Newcastle to find a solution to unlock Willock’s potential, ensuring he can once again become a pivotal part of the squad. The club’s aspirations hinge on resolving this issue and rekindling the promise that Willock once represented.
