Unai Emery has emphasized that Aston Villa’s strategic approach to transfers will be crucial for maintaining competitiveness in both the Premier League and European competitions. Following a successful fourth-place finish last season, Villa faced financial constraints that required them to generate revenue by the end of June to adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations. The club made significant sales, including Douglas Luiz for £42 million and academy products Tim Iroegbunam and Omari Kellyman for a combined total of approximately £30 million. Additionally, Moussa Diaby was transferred to Al-Ittihad for £50.5 million, further reflecting the pressures from UEFA’s squad cost ratio guidelines after qualifying for the Champions League.
To remain competitive, Villa must enhance their revenue streams, as they currently lack the financial power of the traditional “big six” clubs in the league. Emery pointed out that until Villa can match the commercial capabilities of these top teams, they will need to be innovative in their approach. “We aim to be competitive on the field and build a robust structure across all areas,” Emery stated. “Our goal is to improve continuously, increasing our budget through Champions League and Premier League participation, while being smart in our buying and selling decisions.”
He acknowledged the disparity in financial resources compared to rival clubs, saying, “The budgets of the other teams are greater than ours, which creates a significant gap.” Emery is focused on developing players both individually and collectively, as well as refining tactical strategies. He stressed the importance of not merely swapping one player for another or overspending on multiple signings, but rather utilizing their existing capabilities effectively.
As Villa prepares to face Tottenham this Sunday, a team they have outperformed in the past two seasons, Emery reflected on the progress made since he took charge two years ago. Only Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal have amassed more Premier League points than Villa during this period. A strong start to the current season places Villa in a favorable position to solidify their top-four standing in their tenth league match.
“My message at the start of the season was clear,” Emery explained. “Sustaining our level is a significant challenge. We’re currently fourth, alongside Arsenal and a couple of other teams. Meanwhile, clubs like Chelsea, Tottenham, Newcastle, and Manchester United are also improving and could catch up to us.” He reiterated that while they enjoy competing in the Champions League, the Premier League remains their primary focus, with the objective of maintaining the high level achieved last year across all 38 matches.
Emery noted that achieving consistent performance is essential, stating, “Two years ago, we reached a commendable level, and now my aim is to continue improving alongside the players, club, and coaching staff to compete effectively across various tournaments.” He acknowledged recent setbacks but remains focused on the long-term development of the squad.
With key players like Tyrone Mings, Boubacar Kamara, Emi Buendia, and others potentially facing challenges due to injuries, Emery understands the importance of depth in the squad. “This process is not just for the immediate future but for the entire season,” he remarked. “I concentrate on each match while also planning for sustained strength and consistency.” His approach highlights the need for a long-term vision as they aim to compete at the highest levels both domestically and in Europe.
