‘bigger issues’ for Newcastle as PIF ‘will have no impact’ on transfer.” Stephen Borson

Newcastle United’s Future Unaffected by Scaling Back of International Investments

Recent commentary from finance expert Stefan Borson suggests that Newcastle United will remain unaffected by the decision of their owners to reduce international investments. This assertion comes in light of a statement made by Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the chairman of Newcastle and the governor of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), during the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh on October 29. Al-Rumayyan announced plans for PIF to decrease its overseas investment portfolio from 30% to between 18% and 20%.

PIF, which acquired Newcastle in a £305 million deal alongside the Reuben Brothers and PCP Capital Partners in October 2021, currently manages assets worth approximately £720 billion. Despite the significant financial backing PIF provides, Borson emphasizes that the club’s primary challenges stem from the financial regulations governing football, rather than the fluctuations in investment strategies from the fund.

Borson told Football Insider, “I suspect it won’t have any impact at all.” He elaborated that the financial dynamics of Premier League football are relatively minor compared to the scale of PIF’s overall investments. He pointed out that the main constraints Newcastle faces arise from strict financial regulations, which include not just the Premier League’s own financial sustainability rules but also the regulations imposed by UEFA.

Furthermore, Borson indicated that the potential financial adjustments from PIF—such as a few million pounds for sponsorships or infrastructure projects—pale in comparison to the vast resources at PIF’s disposal. He concluded, “I would say overall it will have no impact.”
