Uncertainty continues to surround the future of Cristian Romero at Tottenham Hotspur, with conflicting reports emerging about the defender’s contract situation and whether a release clause could pave the way for a move away from North London this summer.

Several sources have claimed that Romero’s contract includes a release clause worth around £52 million. According to those reports, the clause could potentially be triggered by three European heavyweights — Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid — should they decide to make a formal approach for the Argentine centre-back during the upcoming transfer window.

However, not everyone agrees with that interpretation of the contract. Well-known transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has previously insisted that there is actually no official release clause written into Romero’s deal. Instead, Romano suggested that the defender may have a “gentleman’s agreement” with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy which could allow him to leave the club if an offer in the region of £50–£52 million arrives.

While the exact details of the agreement remain unclear, speculation about Romero’s future has continued to grow, particularly as several of Europe’s top clubs are believed to be monitoring his situation. Some observers even believe the 27-year-old could depart Tottenham this summer regardless of whether the club remains in the Premier League.

Now, Romero’s father, Victor Romero, has added another layer to the debate by speaking publicly about his son’s situation and Tottenham’s likely stance if a transfer offer arrives.

In an interview with Cadena 3, Victor explained that the defender still has two years remaining on his current contract with Spurs and that the club would not consider allowing him to leave without receiving a significant transfer fee.

“He still has two years left on his contract with Tottenham and a very high release clause,” Victor said. “The English club is not going to let him go for free. The figure being discussed is somewhere between $50 million and $70 million [approximately £37.8m to £53m]. From my point of view, they will want to recover what they invested in him.”

Tottenham signed Romero permanently after his impressive loan spell from Juventus, and the Argentine quickly established himself as one of the club’s most important defensive players. Because of that, Spurs would understandably be reluctant to lose a player of his quality unless a substantial offer was placed on the table.

Interestingly, there have also been surprising rumours circulating in Argentina suggesting that Romero could one day return to his boyhood club, Club Atletico Belgrano — the side where he first began his professional career.

While the idea of such a move has generated excitement among supporters of the Córdoba-based club, Victor Romero admitted that he is just as surprised as anyone by the speculation.

“It’s a bombshell that just keeps getting bigger,” he said when asked about the rumours. “I hope it’s true — as a Belgrano supporter and as his father, what more could I want? But the truth is that I don’t know anything about it.”

He continued by explaining that his son tends to stay quiet about his plans and rarely comments publicly on transfer speculation.

“Cuti isn’t someone who makes statements, so that’s why it surprises me,” Victor added. “I honestly don’t know anything. But in football, anything can happen. One day you might be thinking about being closer to your family, and the next day a club builds a team capable of winning a championship and everything changes. I don’t want to say something that isn’t true.”
