Just days after playing a pivotal role in Tottenham Hotspur’s stunning Europa League final victory over Manchester United, Cristian Romero has reportedly expressed his desire to leave the club and join Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
The 27-year-old Argentine defender was instrumental in Spurs’ 2-0 win in Bilbao, delivering a commanding performance at the heart of the defence. Romero helped shut down United’s attacking threats, earning praise from compatriot Alejandro Garnacho, who hailed him as “the best centre-half in the world.”
Romero’s influence has grown steadily since his £42 million arrival from Atalanta in 2021. Known for his aggressive defending, leadership qualities, and technical ability, he has become a cornerstone of Tottenham’s backline under multiple managers. His presence has helped transform Spurs’ defence into one of the more solid units in English football.
However, according to Spanish outlet Marca, Romero has informed Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy of his intention to depart North London this summer. Atletico Madrid are leading the chase for his signature, and initial talks have already taken place between Atletico sporting director Carlos Bucero and Romero’s agent Ciro Palermo. The Spanish club’s president, Miguel Angel Gil, is also reportedly ready to intervene personally to ensure the transfer goes through.
While discussions were put on hold until the conclusion of the Europa League campaign, Atletico are now preparing a formal offer. The two clubs have maintained a working relationship in recent years, with deals involving Kieran Trippier, Matt Doherty, and Sergio Reguilon making the switch between the clubs.
Tottenham are believed to value Romero at around €70 million (£58 million), a fee Atletico may attempt to negotiate down. The defender’s current contract with Spurs is set to expire next summer, which could increase pressure on Levy to cash in rather than risk losing him for free in 2026.
Winning the Europa League – Spurs’ first major trophy in 17 years – and securing a return to the Champions League for the 2025/26 season has not changed Romero’s mindset. The defender remains keen on a new challenge in Spain, particularly under the guidance of Atletico boss Diego Simeone, a manager known for his defensive discipline and passion, traits Romero deeply admires.
A move to the Wanda Metropolitano would also see Romero reunite with close friends and national teammates Rodrigo De Paul and Nahuel Molina. There are also reports that Julian Alvarez, who left Manchester City for Atletico last summer in a high-profile £82 million move, has been encouraging the switch.
Following the final whistle in Bilbao, Romero hinted that he may have reached the end of his Spurs journey. Reflecting on the season, he said:
“I gave everything for this shirt. I came here with the mentality of making history, I achieved it, and now it’s time to enjoy it.”
Those words have only added fuel to the growing belief that Romero’s time in North London is drawing to a close, with Atletico Madrid poised to be his next destination.
