Brentford manager Thomas Frank is reportedly on the brink of being appointed as the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, following an agreement on personal terms with the North London club. This comes after the shock dismissal of Ange Postecoglou, who was relieved of his duties just 16 days after guiding Spurs to their first major piece of silverware in nearly two decades.
Postecoglou’s short-lived but historic tenure ended abruptly on Friday, despite having led Tottenham to victory in the UEFA Europa League final—a triumph that brought the club its first trophy in 17 years. However, this European success was overshadowed by a dismal Premier League campaign, which saw Spurs finish perilously close to relegation. The club managed just one position above the drop zone, recording 22 losses across 38 league fixtures.
In an official club statement, Tottenham paid tribute to Postecoglou’s achievements while justifying the decision to part ways with him.
> “Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw,” the statement read. “However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place.”
The club further elaborated on the reasoning behind the managerial change, pointing to a steep decline in domestic form.
> “Following a positive start to the 2023/24 Premier League season, we accumulated only 78 points over our last 66 league games,” the statement continued. “Last season marked our worst-ever finish in the Premier League. While injuries and a decision to prioritise our European campaign were contributing factors, we believe a fresh approach is necessary to restore competitiveness across all fronts.”
Thomas Frank quickly emerged as the frontrunner to fill the vacancy. The Danish coach, widely respected for his tactical acumen and team-building prowess, is believed to have agreed to join Tottenham, pending a finalised compensation deal between Spurs and Brentford.
Frank took charge of Brentford in 2018 and has since transformed the club’s fortunes, leading them to Premier League promotion in 2021 and successfully consolidating their top-flight status in the seasons that followed. His achievements with the Bees have made him a highly sought-after figure, and he was even considered for the Manchester United job during a previous managerial search.
In an earlier interview with the Sports Agents podcast, Frank spoke candidly about the lure of bigger clubs, while emphasizing his deep-rooted loyalty to Brentford.
> “I am probably at one of the best clubs in the world—end of discussion,” Frank said. “In terms of alignment, leadership, culture—everything. Why should I ever leave this place? But of course, things can change. Sometimes you want new inspiration, or you find it where you are.”
He added that the pressures and exposure at elite clubs aren’t always as glamorous as they appear.
> “If I ever did get the offer to go to a big club and decided to take it, I don’t think it would necessarily make my life better. Maybe it’s a challenge you need to experience. But I’ve sacrificed a lot—missed my children’s birthdays five years in a row. I’ve worked 60 to 70 hours a week for three decades. You never know if the next job will be better or worse.”
As Tottenham looks to rebuild and aim for greater consistency, the appointment of Frank signals a potential shift toward long-term strategic planning, with an emphasis on stability, development, and modern football principles. The official announcement is expected once the financial details between the two clubs are finalised.
