Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to go all out in their efforts to retain Cristian Romero by making him the club’s highest-paid player, according to a report from TBR Football. The north London side are determined to keep hold of their World Cup-winning centre-back amid growing interest from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.
In a dramatic turn of events, Spurs have parted ways with head coach Ange Postecoglou following an underwhelming end to the campaign. The club is now set to appoint Brentford manager Thomas Frank as his successor, signalling the beginning of a new chapter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
With the managerial situation addressed, chairman Daniel Levy is prioritising squad stability—and keeping Romero is now at the top of his agenda.
The Argentine defender, widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s most commanding centre-backs, has drawn praise from teammates and pundits alike. Fellow defender Micky van de Ven has previously labelled Romero as “world-class,” and his performances have not gone unnoticed on the continent.
Atletico Madrid have identified Romero as a key summer transfer target and have reportedly held talks with their manager Diego Simeone about bringing his compatriot to the Spanish capital.
Sources suggest that Romero has already agreed personal terms with Atletico, indicating his strong interest in a switch to La Liga. However, no formal agreement has been reached between the two clubs over a transfer fee. Despite Romero’s desire to play in Spain, he has not closed the door on remaining in north London. He is said to be open to hearing Tottenham’s offer and could be swayed by the right financial package and the club’s vision under the incoming manager. Spurs are reportedly prepared to offer him a salary exceeding the current club record of £190,000-a-week, which is earned by captain Son Heung-min. A new deal could see Romero earn around £200,000-a-week, making him the highest-paid player at the club.
Tottenham, however, are known to be cautious with their wage structure. While they are willing to stretch it for a key figure like Romero, they are unlikely to make any unsustainable financial commitments. Levy will be hoping that the Champions League carrot and a clear role under a new manager can help turn Romero’s head back towards Tottenham.
