Newcastle coach Eddie Howe has shed light on the club’s decision to sell Lloyd Kelly to Juventus during the final days of the January transfer window. He admitted that Newcastle were “very reluctant” to let the defender go but suggested that the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) may have influenced the move.
Juventus secured Kelly’s signing on deadline day, initially on loan for €3 million, with an obligation to buy for €14.5 million, plus potential bonuses of up to €3 million.
Kelly had only arrived at Newcastle in the summer on a free transfer from AFC Bournemouth. However, speaking at a pre-match press conference, Howe explained that while they valued Kelly’s abilities, he struggled for playing time due to competition within the squad. He emphasized that financial considerations played a role in the club’s decision, aiming for long-term sustainability.
Despite the move, Howe praised Kelly’s professionalism and wished him success in his new challenge with Juventus.
