Brighton forward Joao Pedro has reportedly set his sights on a move to London in the upcoming summer transfer window—a decision that could significantly bolster Chelsea’s hopes of landing the Brazilian, while simultaneously derailing Newcastle United’s pursuit of the player.

Pedro has emerged as a key target for Chelsea as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2025–26 campaign. Reports have indicated that the Blues are preparing a £50 million offer for the 22-year-old, who has impressed during his stint at Brighton since arriving from Watford.

Despite Chelsea already making moves in the transfer market—most notably with the signing of young striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town—the club remains active in the hunt for another forward. Among their options is Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, though Pedro is believed to be higher on their wishlist due to his proven Premier League experience.

Newcastle United had also identified Pedro as a potential alternative after their bid for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo faltered. In a recent interview with Brazilian outlet Trivela, Brighton defender and compatriot Igor Julio revealed that Pedro is not keen on relocating to northern England. Instead, the young attacker is said to have a strong preference for living and playing in London, which gives Chelsea—and potentially Arsenal—a considerable edge in negotiations.

“Joao has already made it clear to the club that he’s ready for the next step,” said Julio. “He wants to leave, try something new, challenge himself at a higher level. That’s not a secret at Brighton anymore.”

Julio continued: “I’ve talked to him about it a lot. I told him he needs to think long-term—about the kind of team that fits his ambitions. If I were in his shoes, I’d choose a club that fights for the Premier League title, plays Champions League football, and has a winning mentality. Liverpool, for example, would be perfect for him. That’s my dream club, but I know his heart is set on London.”

The defender went on to confirm that Pedro “really wants to live in London” and is likely to give priority to any club from the capital that comes forward with an offer. This revelation significantly boosts Chelsea’s position, while Arsenal are also monitoring the situation. The Gunners could make a move if they fail to sign either Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko, their primary striker targets.

Pedro has been a consistent performer for Brighton since his arrival, hitting double digits in goals across his two seasons at the Amex Stadium. However, his relationship with the club appeared to sour towards the end of the last campaign, when he was dropped from the matchday squad following a training ground disagreement.

With both Chelsea and Newcastle set to feature in next season’s Champions League, Pedro is undoubtedly attracted by the prospect of top-level European football. But the allure of life in London, combined with Chelsea’s increasing intent, could ultimately determine his next move.
