Mathys Tel Set to Join Tottenham Hotspur Permanently as Bayern Munich Sanction Sale
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly on the brink of finalising a permanent deal for promising French attacker Mathys Tel, who spent the second half of last season on loan from Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich.
The 20-year-old forward joined Spurs during the January transfer window in what was initially a short-term move, though the agreement included a €50 million option to buy. While Tel showed only glimpses of his talent in a Spurs shirt—scoring two goals in limited Premier League appearances—his potential clearly left a lasting impression on the club’s decision-makers, especially new head coach Thomas Frank.
Despite Bayern Munich’s eagerness to offload the youngster early in the transfer window, Tottenham had initially been reluctant to trigger the full €50 million clause. The London club even attempted to negotiate a second loan spell, a proposal which was met with resistance from the German side, who had already decided that Tel was no longer part of their long-term plans.
However, a breakthrough has now been reached. According to respected German broadcaster Sky Deutschland, negotiations between the two clubs have accelerated in recent days and a permanent transfer is now said to be in the final stages of completion. Spurs are set to pay a reduced fee of €35 million to secure Tel’s services, which, when added to the €10 million loan fee paid in January, brings the total investment in the young attacker to €45 million.
This deal would mark the first major signing of the Thomas Frank era at Tottenham and signals the club’s intent to invest in youthful attacking talent. Frank is believed to be an admirer of Tel’s versatility, raw pace, and technical ability, and is keen to begin shaping the squad around players who can develop under his guidance.
Though Tel’s impact during his initial spell in north London was modest, there is a growing belief within the club that he has the tools to evolve into a top-tier Premier League forward. Frank is confident that with a full pre-season and greater tactical familiarity, Tel could become a key asset for Spurs in the coming campaign.
Bayern Munich, for their part, are pleased to have concluded the transfer early in the summer window. The German champions had made the strategic decision some time ago to move Tel on, given the limited role he was expected to play in the upcoming season. With 83 appearances and 16 goals to his name during his time at the Allianz Arena, Tel departs Bavaria with valuable experience but without having fully established himself in the senior squad.
The funds raised from his sale will now allow Bayern to reinvest as they reshape their attacking options under new management.
Interestingly, Tottenham midfielder James Maddison had publicly urged the club to retain Tel just last month, praising the youngster’s work ethic and technical qualities during training and in matches. Maddison’s endorsement appears to have been taken seriously, as the club now moves to bring the Frenchman into their plans on a long-term basis.
If all goes as expected, Mathys Tel will soon become the first signing under Thomas Frank—a symbolic start to what Spurs fans hope will be a new and exciting chapter at the club.
