Newcastle United may soon face a difficult decision regarding veteran right-back Kieran Trippier — a decision that, while not part of their ideal plan, could become unavoidable due to financial and squad-balancing realities.
Trippier was the first marquee signing under the ownership of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), joining the club during a critical period when the Magpies were battling relegation. Since then, the experienced defender has played a key role in Newcastle’s impressive rise, both on and off the pitch, becoming a symbol of their transformation under Eddie Howe. His leadership, professionalism, and winning mentality have endeared him to fans, and at 34 years old, he’s now regarded as a club legend at St James’ Park.
Even though Trippier’s days as an automatic starter may be behind him — particularly with the emergence of younger talents in his position — his value in the dressing room remains immense. Manager Eddie Howe is reportedly eager to retain his services for at least another season, valuing his influence as much as his experience. However, keeping the England international may not be entirely in Newcastle’s control.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United could be compelled to entertain offers for Trippier if any are submitted this summer, especially due to pressures from the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). With the club needing to free up funds and manage squad depth smartly, veteran or fringe players like Trippier may find themselves at the centre of tough financial decisions.
Italian giants AC Milan are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. The Serie A side, who previously explored a move for Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, are now reportedly turning their attention to Trippier. Given his pedigree and experience in both the Premier League and European competitions, Trippier could represent a valuable short-term solution for Milan.
While Newcastle would prefer to keep the defender — whose current deal runs until the summer of 2026 — the harsh realities of financial regulations may force their hand. Trippier is not considered one of the first-choice full-backs at present, with Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall now regarded as Howe’s preferred options when fit. The club expects Hall to be ready for pre-season, while Livramento has impressed during his outings, potentially pushing Trippier further down the pecking order.
Trippier himself has previously spoken about his frustrations over a lack of playing time. Speaking to Sky Sports in April, the right-back candidly acknowledged that he hadn’t featured as much as he would have liked.

“It’s been a tough year,” he admitted. “I’ve not played as many games as I would have liked, but that is full credit to Tino obviously.
You’ve got to be professional, and I’ve been professional. I’ve worked hard in training, and you never know what could happen.
I had an opportunity in the final. Every opportunity I get I try to grab it with both hands.”

Trippier’s return to the lineup late in the season, particularly his impressive performance in the Carabao Cup final, demonstrated that he still has plenty to offer. However, it’s worth noting that his reintroduction to the team came in part due to Hall’s injury.
With both Hall and Livramento expected to be fully fit for the 2025/26 season, the likelihood of Trippier featuring regularly in the starting XI seems slim. While he would still be expected to play a role — especially with Newcastle juggling Premier League fixtures and a return to European competition — his minutes could be limited.
For Trippier, who is clearly hungry for more time on the pitch, a move may become the only way to secure the regular football he desires. And for Newcastle, losing a dressing room leader would certainly sting — but if a suitable offer arrives and PSR compliance is at stake, the club might have no choice but to say goodbye to one of their modern icons.
