Frank could allow Tottenham defender to leave for ‘Generous’ fee

Ben Davies’ long-standing association with Tottenham Hotspur could be approaching its conclusion after nearly 11 years of loyal service to the North London club.

Davies, who was the very first signing made under former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, holds the distinction of being the current longest-serving player in the squad. With Wrexham on a remarkable rise after securing a historic third consecutive promotion—becoming the first team in England’s top five divisions to achieve such a feat—there’s growing belief that Davies might be tempted by a return to Wales. The Red Dragons are not only ambitious but are now preparing for life in the Championship, and Davies’ experience at the highest level would be a tremendous asset to their defence.

Interestingly, Tottenham’s decision to extend Davies’ contract might have been influenced by their awareness of Wrexham’s interest. By doing so, the club has safeguarded itself from losing the player on a free transfer, thereby ensuring they remain in control of his future.

Tottenham News recently spoke with John Wenham, owner of the Lilywhite Rose podcast, who supported the decision. “I don’t think this changes Davies’ situation too much,” Wenham explained. “It makes sense to extend his contract rather than let him leave on a free. Thomas Frank will assess him in pre-season and decide if he fits into the plans moving forward.”

Wenham also highlighted that both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte had previously opted to keep Davies around, valuing his professionalism and tactical adaptability. However, should new head coach Thomas Frank decide otherwise, the presence of interest—particularly from Wrexham—means Tottenham can command a respectable transfer fee.

Even if a deal does not materialise, there’s still a case for keeping Davies around as a valuable squad player. With Spurs set to compete on multiple fronts next season—including a return to the UEFA Champions League—the need for experienced and dependable players cannot be overstated. Davies has shown, time and again, that he is a trustworthy option in defence, capable of slotting in as a left-back or centre-back when called upon.

While his best years may be behind him, Davies remains a consummate professional and a positive influence in the dressing room. His versatility and experience could be vital in a long and grueling campaign across domestic and European competitions.

In conclusion, although a transfer to Wrexham could offer Davies the chance to play more regularly and be part of an exciting Welsh football project, Tottenham would not necessarily lose out by keeping him.
