Tottenham Hotspur appear on the verge of confirming their first signing under newly appointed manager Thomas Frank, with Japanese defensive prospect Kota Takai set to make the move to North London. Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that the deal is all but finalized, and an official announcement is expected in the coming days. The 20-year-old central defender, currently plying his trade at Kawasaki Frontale in the J-League, is set to join the Premier League side in a move believed to be worth around £5 million—a record fee for a player departing the Japanese top flight.

Frank, who was appointed earlier this month following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou, is wasting no time in shaping the squad to his liking. Postecoglou’s tenure ended despite securing Europa League glory and delivering the club its first piece of silverware in 17 years. However, his domestic form ultimately led to his departure. Spurs endured a dismal Premier League campaign, finishing just one position above the relegation zone—their worst-ever league finish since the competition’s inception in 1992. In response, the club turned to Frank, whose impressive four-year stint at Brentford saw him guide the Bees to multiple top-half finishes and earn widespread praise for his tactical acumen and player development.

Now at the helm of Spurs, Frank’s first individual signing is poised to be Kota Takai, a promising young centre-back who has already made a name for himself in Asia. Despite being just 20 years old, Takai has already amassed 57 appearances in the J-League and featured four times in the AFC Champions League. His leadership qualities were recognised earlier this year when he captained Kawasaki Frontale in a match against Yokohama F. Marinos, the former club of Postecoglou.

Takai’s current contract in Japan still has 18 months remaining, but his rise has been meteoric, and Tottenham have moved quickly to secure his services. The fee being paid represents a significant investment, underscoring the faith Spurs are placing in the young defender’s potential.

Tottenham’s defensive core already features several youthful talents, including Micky van de Ven, Radu Drăgușin, and Luka Vušković, the latter of whom recently earned his debut with the Croatian national team at just 18 years old. Nevertheless, Frank appears keen to bolster the backline further and sees Takai as an ideal addition to complement his youthful defensive setup.

While Tottenham have already welcomed Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso to the club through structured loan agreements—with obligations and options to buy, respectively—Takai stands to be Frank’s first permanent signing since taking charge.
