Tottenham Hotspur are pressing ahead with plans to streamline their squad under newly appointed head coach Thomas Frank, and the club is now edging closer to finalising the loan departure of young striker Alejo Veliz.

Following the return of the first-team squad to Hotspur Way this week for pre-season preparations, Frank has had his initial opportunity to assess the players at his disposal. With just under two weeks remaining until Spurs kick off their pre-season campaign, several key squad decisions are being made behind the scenes — including which fringe or developing players will stay, be loaned out, or moved on permanently.

Among the first significant developments of the summer, Tottenham have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Rosario Central for the loan return of 21-year-old forward Alejo Veliz. According to TyC Sports, the deal will see the Argentine striker rejoin his former club on a temporary basis, despite Tottenham initially holding out for a permanent transfer.

Veliz, who joined Spurs in 2023 for a fee of around £13 million, is said to have been adamant about a return to Rosario Central — the club where he made his professional breakthrough. This strong personal desire ultimately convinced the North London club to approve a loan move without an option to buy, despite interest from other Argentine heavyweights such as Racing Club, Boca Juniors, and River Plate.

Since his arrival in England, Veliz has struggled to find regular minutes, making just eight appearances in a Tottenham shirt. He has spent time out on loan at both Sevilla and Espanyol in Spain, though neither stint yielded a major breakthrough or significant impact in European football.

Despite his recent challenges, Veliz remains highly regarded by several figures within the game. Former Sevilla winger and fellow Argentine Erik Lamela has praised Veliz in the past, calling him “the best of the best” when the young striker secured a loan move to Espanyol. The two shared a brief overlap at Sevilla but never played together competitively.

Tottenham’s former manager Ange Postecoglou also had high hopes for Veliz upon his arrival at the club. Speaking shortly after the transfer was completed last year, Postecoglou commented on Veliz’s potential, stating:

> “With young Veliz, he’s one we identified and he’s got a lot of talent for a youngster. He’s got a great profile. He is a big guy, but he’s very mobile and he works hard. He’s already made an impact in the Argentine first division, and again, good to have him in.”

Despite the glowing endorsements, Veliz has yet to live up to those expectations in Europe, and Spurs now see another loan spell — this time back in more familiar surroundings — as a crucial opportunity for the forward to rebuild confidence and reignite his form.

This potential departure is part of a wider effort by Spurs and Thomas Frank to reshape the squad ahead of the 2025/26 season. With the Danish manager still in the early days of his reign, further outgoings and potentially new arrivals are expected as Tottenham look to strike a balance between youth development, squad depth, and competitive ambition both domestically and in Europe.
