Tottenham Hotspur hold talks with Juventus over potential midfield swap deal
Tottenham Hotspur appear to be intensifying their pursuit of a new central midfielder, and Juventus star Douglas Luiz has emerged as a key target. The Brazilian, who only joined the Italian giants last summer from Aston Villa, is reportedly eager to return to the Premier League—and Spurs are exploring creative ways to make that happen.
According to reports, Tottenham have discussed the idea of a swap or part-exchange deal with Juventus, potentially involving their own midfielder Yves Bissouma. The North London club see the acquisition of a top-quality midfielder as a priority for new head coach Thomas Frank, who is preparing for his debut season in charge at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Luiz, 27, has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at Juventus and is now believed to be “anxious” to return to England, where he previously impressed during his time at Aston Villa. His limited opportunities in Serie A have left him eager to reassert himself in one of the world’s most competitive leagues, and Spurs could offer him the platform to do just that.
This isn’t the first time Tottenham have shown interest in Luiz. During the January transfer window, the club was already considering a move for the Brazil international. However, with Juventus then reluctant to let him go midway through the season, no deal materialised. Now, the circumstances appear to have shifted in Tottenham’s favour.
TBR Football reports that both Tottenham and Manchester United have held preliminary talks with Juventus over Luiz’s availability. The idea of including Yves Bissouma in the deal has reportedly been floated, as Spurs aim to strike a cost-effective agreement that would benefit all parties. Bissouma, while still rated highly, may not feature prominently in Thomas Frank’s tactical plans, making him a potential makeweight in negotiations.
Luiz, who remains under contract with Juventus, is attracting interest beyond just Tottenham and United. Several other Premier League clubs—namely Everton, Fulham, Nottingham Forest, and West Ham—have all expressed interest in securing the midfielder’s services. Aston Villa, his former club, are also keeping tabs on the situation and could make a shock move to re-sign him, although sources indicate that Unai Emery’s side are currently focused on other priorities.
Outside of England, Luiz’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed either. Turkish champions Galatasaray and multiple clubs in the Saudi Pro League are said to be monitoring his situation. However, the player himself is reportedly fixated on a Premier League return, which could give English clubs a clear advantage in the race for his signature.
As Tottenham prepare for what promises to be a pivotal season under Thomas Frank, securing a dynamic, ball-playing midfielder like Luiz could be a major coup. With just weeks remaining before the new campaign begins, expect talks to intensify as Spurs look to finalize their midfield reinforcement.
