Newcastle United Turn Down Calvert-Lewin Move Over Injury Concerns

Newcastle United have reportedly explored the possibility of bringing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to St. James’ Park this summer, but ultimately decided against pursuing the former Everton striker due to his persistent injury record, according to The Guardian.

 

The Magpies remain in the market for a new centre-forward, regardless of whether Alexander Isak departs before the close of the transfer window. Calvert-Lewin’s name briefly came up during internal discussions as a potential addition, but after evaluating the risks and rewards, Newcastle concluded that his fitness history posed too great a gamble.

 

Calvert-Lewin, now a free agent after ending his nine-year spell with Everton, has struggled with a series of injuries in recent seasons. While Newcastle chose to pass on the opportunity, Leeds United have moved decisively, with the newly promoted Premier League club closing in on his signature. The 28-year-old is currently undergoing a medical at Elland Road ahead of a free transfer, with both player and club keen to finalise the deal.

 

The England international departs Goodison Park with an overall tally of 71 goals in 274 appearances. His last cap for the Three Lions came in 2021, and he will be eager to rediscover his form in order to force his way back into Gareth Southgate’s plans.

 

Although Calvert-Lewin featured more regularly in the past two campaigns—making 26 Premier League appearances last season and 33 the year before—his scoring output has been modest. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, he has managed just 17 league goals. His injury struggles have been significant, keeping him sidelined for a total of 529 days over the past four years. This track record ultimately convinced Newcastle that the risk outweighed the potential reward, even with the player available on a free.

 

Manager Eddie Howe is thought to have several other targets in mind as Newcastle aim to bolster their attacking options. Reports suggest the club have shown interest in Manchester United’s Rasmus Højlund, while Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson is also believed to favour a move to Tyneside should he leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

 

With just two weeks remaining in the transfer window, Newcastle are expected to be linked with multiple striking options as they attempt to strengthen their squad for the season ahead.
