Tottenham now make “new proposal” for £52m “beast”, personal talks ongoing
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié. While journalist Charlie Gold recently suggested that the Ecuadorian was not on Spurs’ radar, Fabrizio Romano has now provided a major update that completely changes the narrative. Taking to X on Monday morning, the transfer expert revealed that Tottenham have submitted a fresh proposal for the 23-year-old centre-back, who is understood to be keen on leaving Germany this summer.
According to Romano, discussions have already begun over personal terms, with Spurs aiming to secure Hincapié on an initial loan agreement. Crucially, that deal would include a mandatory purchase clause set at €60m (£52m) — the exact figure of his release clause with Leverkusen. This structure would allow Tottenham to spread the financial hit while still committing to a long-term investment in one of Europe’s most highly regarded young defenders.
Why Hincapié Appeals to Tottenham
For new head coach Thomas Frank, strengthening his backline before the transfer window closes is a top priority. Despite having Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven forming a strong partnership, injuries and fixture congestion mean Spurs need quality depth. Hincapié, who can play both centrally and as a left-back, ticks all the right boxes.
The Ecuador international brings with him a wealth of experience despite his young age. Since joining Leverkusen in 2021, he has featured extensively in both domestic and European competitions. Former Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso was full of admiration for Hincapié’s adaptability, describing him as a “very modern defender.” The Spaniard highlighted the youngster’s ability to slot into various roles, from left centre-back in a back three to left-back in a four-man defence. That kind of tactical flexibility could prove invaluable for Frank, who has already demonstrated a willingness to tweak his systems depending on the opposition.
Scouts have also raved about Hincapié, with talent spotter Antonio Mango branding him a “beast” for his physicality, composure on the ball, and defensive awareness. While it may be tough to displace Romero and Van de Ven immediately, the Ecuadorian’s versatility means he could still see plenty of minutes across different competitions, offering Frank a reliable rotation option and insurance policy in case of injuries.

Tottenham’s interest in Hincapié underlines their ambition to build a squad capable of challenging for silverware.
