Wyness Warns Newcastle United About Future Spending Amid Profit and Sustainability Rules
Keith Wyness, the former chief executive of Everton, has cautioned that Newcastle United may face challenges in making significant financial investments in the near future without "trading" some of their key players. During a recent episode of the *Inside Track* podcast from Football Insider, Wyness, who held the CEO position at Everton from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a consultancy for elite football clubs, emphasized the importance of managing resources effectively under the existing Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Wyness pointed out that retaining star players like Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak, and Anthony Gordon could become increasingly difficult as the club navigates these financial regulations. This past summer, all three players were linked with potential transfers, reflecting the club's precarious position regarding PSR compliance. While Newcastle managed to hold onto these talents, they missed out on opportunities to strengthen their squad, including a failed bid for defender Marc Guehi just before the transfer window closed.
Currently, Newcastle United has started the season strongly, earning 10 points from their first four matches as they aim to secure a return to European competition for the 2025-26 season. However, Wyness believes that without addressing their financial strategy, future investments will be limited.
"Newcastle have reached a stage in their development where they can begin to trade players effectively," Wyness noted. He explained that the club has built a squad with valuable assets that could facilitate movement in the transfer market. However, he reiterated that the constraints imposed by PSR would require a more strategic approach to future transfers.
Wyness stated, “Until there’s a change in the PSR landscape, it will be challenging for them to make substantial purchases without generating funds through sales. The club needs to navigate these challenges thoughtfully.” He suggested that Newcastle's future transfer activity will likely involve a careful balance of player trading rather than just outright spending.
- In a related development, the club has been dealt a blow with news that one of their strikers will be sidelined until next month, further complicating their plans as they look to strengthen their squad amid ongoing financial constraints. As the season progresses, Newcastle will need to remain astute in their dealings to maintain their competitive edge while adhering to financial regulations.
