Tottenham Hotspur entered the summer transfer window with a clear objective: reshape the squad, add greater quality across the pitch, and provide new head coach Roberto De Zerbi with the players needed to implement his attacking philosophy. Judging by the club’s activity so far, Spurs have wasted little time in pursuing that ambition, completing several high-profile deals while continuing to explore further additions before the transfer deadline.
The North London club has already been one of the busiest spenders in the Premier League, committing around £237 million on new arrivals. Those investments have largely focused on strengthening the spine of the team, with Tottenham securing the services of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Jan Paul van Hecke in three blockbuster transfers designed to improve both quality and depth.
In addition to those expensive signings, Spurs have also moved smartly in the free-agent market. Experienced goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has joined to provide competition between the posts, while defenders Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson have been recruited to reinforce a back line that struggled with injuries and inconsistency last season. However, a fresh name has now entered the conversation, and it is one that would undoubtedly spark debate among Tottenham supporters.
According to senior talkSPORT correspondent Alex Crook, Tottenham could have an opportunity to sign Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford for a surprisingly affordable fee.
Rashford’s future at Old Trafford has become increasingly uncertain following a difficult spell with the club. Last season, the England international spent time on loan at Barcelona in an attempt to rediscover his best form. Although he produced encouraging performances during his stay in Spain, the Catalan club have reportedly decided against exercising their option to complete a permanent transfer.
That decision has placed Rashford’s future firmly back in Manchester’s hands, but United are believed to be open to selling the academy graduate if a suitable offer arrives.
Earlier this month, Rashford reportedly had a £40 million release clause in his contract that could be triggered by every club except Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester City. With that clause now expired, Manchester United are said to have lowered their expectations regarding his transfer value.
Crook believes Tottenham could capitalise on the situation by securing the England international for around £30 million, a figure that would represent a significant reduction compared to the sums Rashford was once valued at during the peak years of his career.
Speaking about the possibility, Crook first dismissed suggestions that Arsenal would make a move for the 28-year-old. He pointed to Mikel Arteta’s efforts to carefully shape the culture within Arsenal’s dressing room, suggesting the Gunners may be reluctant to pursue a player whose attitude has occasionally come under scrutiny.
Instead, Crook feels Tottenham represent a far more realistic destination.
The journalist believes De Zerbi may see Rashford as a player capable of rediscovering his best football under the right coaching environment. The Italian manager has built a reputation for improving talented individuals and helping underperforming players regain confidence, something that could appeal to both Tottenham and Rashford.
Crook explained that if Rashford were to move to London, Tottenham would be the club he would keep a close eye on. In his view, the transfer is one that could genuinely happen, provided Spurs believe the former United star fits De Zerbi’s tactical plans.
There is, however, one significant obstacle that could complicate negotiations.
While the proposed £30 million transfer fee may be viewed as excellent value in today’s market, Rashford’s salary presents a much greater challenge. The forward currently earns around £325,000 per week at Manchester United, making him one of the highest-paid players in English football.
Tottenham have traditionally operated with a carefully managed wage structure and have generally avoided offering contracts at that level. Convincing Rashford to accept a substantial pay reduction could therefore prove to be the biggest hurdle if negotiations ever become serious.
Crook highlighted exactly that concern, suggesting that although Manchester United may now accept a lower transfer fee, Rashford himself has shown little indication that he is prepared to significantly reduce his salary demands.
Despite those financial complications, there is little doubt about Rashford’s ability when performing at his highest level. The England international has enjoyed several outstanding seasons during his career, producing goals and assists consistently while becoming one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking threats.
Even during his loan spell in Spain, Rashford demonstrated flashes of the pace, direct running, and finishing ability that once made him one of Europe’s most highly-rated forwards. He also reminded fans of his quality with energetic displays on the international stage, proving that his talent remains unquestionable.
For Tottenham, the attraction is obvious. Rashford’s versatility would allow him to play on either wing or through the middle, giving De Zerbi multiple tactical options throughout a demanding campaign that will include domestic and European commitments.
Whether Spurs decide to pursue the deal remains to be seen, particularly given the financial commitment required beyond the transfer fee itself.
