Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has once again lifted the lid on growing frustrations inside the club, branding the squad’s lack of depth as “disgraceful” in what appeared to be another pointed swipe at the club’s hierarchy.

The Argentine defender was forced to withdraw during Spurs’ hard-fought 2-2 draw with Manchester City after falling ill, an issue that had already limited his involvement in the midweek victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Romero’s absence only added to an already alarming injury list, pushing Tottenham’s number of unavailable players well into double figures and reigniting uncomfortable comparisons with last season.

Under former boss Ange Postecoglou, Spurs endured a relentless injury crisis that stretched on for months. While Postecoglou managed to guide the club to Europa League success, Tottenham’s domestic campaign collapsed, ending with a shocking 17th-place finish in the Premier League. That disastrous league position ultimately cost the Australian his job, but the problems he faced have not disappeared under his successor, Thomas Frank.

Frank has also been hamstrung by the lack of available players throughout the campaign, struggling to build any momentum with key figures regularly sidelined. Tottenham’s league form has nosedived as a result, with just two wins from their last 15 Premier League matches, a run that has intensified fears of the club being dragged into a relegation scrap.

Although Spurs attempted to ease the pressure in January by completing a mid-season deal for Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, those reinforcements were offset by outgoing business and fresh setbacks. Last season’s top scorer Brennan Johnson was sold, while nine additional players have joined the injury list since the turn of the year, further testing the patience of an already disgruntled fanbase.

It was against this backdrop that Romero vented his frustration shortly after the winter transfer window slammed shut. Writing on Instagram, the Tottenham skipper praised his teammates for their commitment but made no attempt to hide his anger at the situation.

“Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible,” Romero wrote. “I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available — unbelievable but true and disgraceful.

“We’ll keep showing up and taking responsibility to turn this around, working hard and staying together. All that’s left is to thank all of you for being there and for always supporting us, the fans.”

Tottenham did announce the loan signing of Hearts teenager James Wilson later on deadline day, with an option to make the move permanent. However, the young forward has been earmarked for the under-21s and is not expected to make an immediate impact on the first team, underlining how quiet the deadline proved to be for Spurs.

According to the Press Association, Tottenham resisted the urge to pursue short-term solutions, instead prioritising long-term planning. The club’s main aim during the winter window was reportedly to accelerate summer targets, a strategy that led to discussions over a move for Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson, which ultimately fell through.

Similar approaches were taken with Gallagher and Brazilian full-back Souza, but Spurs remained determined to stick to their broader recruitment strategy rather than panic-buy. PA also reports that significant financial backing was available from majority shareholders ENIC, a fact underlined by Tottenham’s unsuccessful attempt to sign Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo.

When Semenyo opted for a move to Manchester City instead, Spurs were content to walk away and wait until the summer to pursue their primary targets, even as injuries mounted and results suffered.

Romero’s latest social media outburst follows an earlier Instagram post in January in which he criticised a lack of communication from unnamed figures behind the scenes. His most recent message struck a chord within the dressing room too, earning likes from several teammates, including Gallagher, James Maddison, Pedro Porro, Xavi Simons and Dominic Solanke.
