Big name is now finished at Tottenham – ‘he will move on’

Former Tottenham Hotspur scout Mick Brown has claimed that Cristian Romero’s future in North London is hanging in the balance after a series of damaging public incidents. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown suggested that the Argentine defender has strained relationships behind the scenes with outspoken comments that have not gone down well with key figures at the club.

According to Brown, patience is beginning to wear thin internally. As a result, Spurs are understood to be increasingly open to the possibility of parting ways with the 27-year-old at the end of the season. Romero himself is also believed to be receptive to a fresh start away from North London, with growing speculation linking him to Spanish giants including Real Madrid.

Romero’s situation has escalated in recent weeks. The centre-back has made headlines for his public criticism of the club, and matters worsened when he was shown a red card in Tottenham’s defeat to Manchester United. That dismissal only deepened concerns among Spurs officials about his temperament and long-term suitability as a leader within the squad.

Earlier reports indicated that Romero could actively push for a move this summer despite being tied down to a long-term contract. While Tottenham are not under immediate pressure to sell due to the length of his deal, the club are said to be wary of keeping an unsettled player who continues to attract negative attention.

Brown told Football Insider on 9 February that if Romero’s public outbursts continue, Spurs will seriously consider cashing in during the upcoming transfer window. Interest is unlikely to be in short supply. Both Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid explored the possibility of signing him last summer. Should either La Liga heavyweight revive their pursuit, Tottenham may be prepared to negotiate rather than risk further disruption.

Romero’s uncertain future is just one of several major decisions looming over the club. Following a difficult run of results that dragged Spurs into a relegation battle, the hierarchy opted to appoint an interim manager until the end of the campaign. Former Marseille boss Igor Tudor has been handed the task of steadying the ship on a short-term basis as Tottenham attempt to pull clear of danger.

However, long-term planning is already underway behind the scenes. Football Insider reported on 15 February that Roberto De Zerbi is firmly in contention to take over permanently. The Italian coach, who previously impressed in the Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion, is highly regarded for his progressive style of play and tactical acumen.

De Zerbi most recently managed Olympique de Marseille, departing earlier this month after their Champions League campaign came to an end. Despite that setback, he enhanced his reputation in Ligue 1 with an attractive brand of football and strong domestic performances.

While he is not the only candidate under consideration, De Zerbi’s experience in English football and his track record of developing talent make him one of the standout names on Tottenham’s shortlist. With uncertainty surrounding both the managerial position and key players such as Romero, the upcoming summer promises to be a pivotal period for Spurs as they attempt to reset and rebuild.
