Sandro Tonali Reveals Tottenham Transfer Bombshell: “I Knew After 10 Minutes This Was My Next Club”
Sandro Tonali has lifted the lid on the extraordinary decision that took him from Newcastle United to Tottenham Hotspur, revealing that he needed just 10 to 15 minutes of conversation with the north London club before becoming convinced that Spurs were going to be his next destination.
The Italy international has now provided his clearest explanation yet of why he chose Tottenham, despite strong interest from Manchester City. According to Tonali, the decision was not driven primarily by money, reputation or the size of the club involved. Instead, it was the passion, seriousness and personal connection he felt during his first conversations with Tottenham that ultimately convinced him.
At just 26, Tonali was one of the midfielders attracting significant attention this summer. Manchester City were understood to have been monitoring the Italian as they looked to strengthen their midfield, with the club assessing several options as part of their rebuild.
However, City never progressed to a formal offer, and Tottenham seized the opportunity.
What makes Tonali’s revelation particularly striking is how quickly he made up his mind.
Speaking to Mail Sport’s Kieran Gill, Tonali explained that his move to England was about much more than football. After the previous season, he and his wife decided that they wanted a fresh start and a major change in their lives.
“England was our solution and we found the best solution in England for me, for my career, for my football, for my happiness, for my family,” Tonali explained.
The midfielder revealed that he had conversations with two clubs but said Tottenham immediately stood out.
“I spoke with two teams. I understood after 10, 15 minutes that Tottenham would be my next team.”
That statement could hardly be more emphatic.
Tonali did not need weeks of negotiations or months of uncertainty to decide his future. One conversation with Tottenham was apparently enough to convince him that Roberto De Zerbi’s project was the right one for the next chapter of his career.
The Italian also revealed that Tottenham’s representatives approached the discussions with an intensity that made a huge impression on him.
“When we spoke with Tottenham, we decided to sign for this team. They spoke with 100 per cent passion, 100 per cent seriousness.”
That passion appears to have been one of the biggest reasons Tottenham were able to beat off competition for the midfielder.
Tonali also highlighted the importance of manager Roberto De Zerbi and the club’s director in convincing him that Spurs were the right destination.
“For this city, for my life outside of football, for my family, OK, it’s like 10 per cent. Roberto and the director made the difference to the deal.”
Those comments could prove enormous for Tottenham supporters.
The club has been attempting to build a new era under De Zerbi, and landing a player of Tonali’s quality represents a major statement of ambition. The Italian midfielder is entering what should be the prime years of his career, and his decision suggests that he has bought into the manager’s vision.
Perhaps the most revealing part of Tonali’s story came when he immediately contacted his wife and family after the Tottenham conversation.
“I spoke after two minutes with my wife and my family and I said, ‘Probably it will be one of my best decisions of my career’.”
His wife then made it clear that the final decision belonged entirely to him.
“You have 100 per cent the control over this decision,” she told him.
For Tonali, the choice was therefore deeply personal.
Manchester City may have offered the attraction of joining one of England’s most successful modern clubs, but Tottenham apparently offered something different — a project, a manager and an environment that Tonali genuinely believed could make him happy both on and off the pitch.
For City, missing out on Tonali is another reminder that even the biggest clubs cannot simply assume they will win every transfer battle.
The club has already invested heavily in its midfield, including the reported £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, while continuing to pursue other targets such as Ayyoub Bouaddi.
But Tottenham’s victory in the Tonali race could ultimately prove one of the most intriguing stories of the summer.
The midfielder’s own words suggest that Spurs did not win because they shouted the loudest with money. They won because, within just a few minutes, they convinced Tonali that Tottenham was where he wanted to be.
And if his prediction proves correct, Tonali could soon look back on that 10-minute conversation as the moment that changed the entire trajectory of his career.
