Wrong choice made already: Tottenham in regret after selling two key star players

John Wenham believes that the rise of Luka Vuskovic could present Tottenham Hotspur with a bold opportunity this summer. In his view, the young defender’s potential is so extraordinary that the club might even consider selling one of their established centre-backs — Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven — not as a setback, but as a powerful signal of the club’s long-term vision.

According to Wenham, such a decision would go beyond simply reshaping the squad. It would also send a clear message to Vuskovic and the people advising him that there is a genuine pathway for him to become a key player in North London. By opening up a starting spot, Spurs could show that they truly believe in his ability and are ready to give him immediate opportunities at the highest level. That type of commitment could be extremely important as Tottenham attempt to keep hold of the highly rated youngster amid growing interest from European giants like FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Both Romero and van de Ven have performed admirably this season, even though Tottenham have endured a difficult campaign overall. The Argentine World Cup winner has been particularly strong in defensive duels, registering 53 tackles so far compared to van de Ven’s 32. Meanwhile, the Dutch defender has impressed in other areas of his game, leading the pair in clearances and ball recoveries thanks to his pace and ability to read danger quickly.

From a financial perspective, either player could command a significant transfer fee if Tottenham decided to cash in. Selling one of them would not only generate funds but would also free up a starting role in central defence — a position that Vuskovic, judging by his current development and performances, appears increasingly capable of stepping into.

However, deciding which of the two defenders to move on would almost certainly divide opinion among supporters. Romero remains a fan favourite because of his aggressive style and leadership qualities, while van de Ven has quickly become admired for his speed, composure, and reliability at the back.

Speculation around their futures has already begun to grow. Reports coming out of Argentina suggest that Romero could be on course to leave Tottenham during the upcoming transfer window, while van de Ven is reportedly attracting strong interest from several rival clubs in the Premier League.

If Tottenham were to lose either defender, the impact might be softened by introducing Vuskovic into the first-team setup. Even so, placing that level of responsibility on such a young player would bring its own risks. While his talent is undeniable, stepping straight into the heart of the defence at a club like Tottenham would represent a huge challenge and a major test of his readiness for elite-level football.
