Rather than simply clearing the ball, Coulibaly prefers to build play from the back, either by carrying the ball forward himself or by delivering accurate passes that break opposition lines and start attacking moves for his team.

Standing at around 6 feet 3 inches tall, the defender also possesses the physical frame that modern centre-backs need, although he is still developing in that department. His long stride and relaxed, almost effortless style of play have led to comparisons with former Joel Matip, who became well known for his elegant ball-carrying runs during his time at Liverpool FC. However, while Coulibaly shows similar technical qualities, there is a growing belief among scouts that he will need to improve his strength and physicality if he is to succeed consistently at the highest level of European football.

Within Tottenham’s long-term defensive planning, Coulibaly is viewed as a player who could complement the qualities of another young defender already linked with the club’s future, Luka Vušković. The Croatian teenager, who is currently gaining valuable experience on loan at Hamburger SV, has been enjoying an impressive spell in Germany despite being only 19 years old. Unlike Coulibaly, Vušković is widely recognised for his physical presence, aerial power, and ability to dominate in defensive duels. Because of these contrasting styles, Tottenham believe the two defenders could eventually form a balanced partnership at the heart of their defence.

However, Vušković’s long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur is not entirely guaranteed. With the club currently fighting to avoid relegation from the Premier League, there are concerns about what might happen if they fail to remain in the division. Tottenham officials reportedly feel that a season in a lower league could actually provide the young Croatian with more opportunities to gain regular first-team minutes.
