Tottenham make ‘likely’ Luka Vuskovic transfer plan ahead of January
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached a firm decision regarding the possibility of parting ways with highly rated defender Luka Vuskovic in the upcoming January transfer window, despite growing interest from several major Bundesliga sides.
Spurs supporters have been eager to see the young Croatian in their colours ever since his arrival from Hajduk Split in 2023. The London club invested around £12 million to secure his signature when he was just 16 years old, a fee that underlined both his potential and the belief held in him by Tottenham’s recruitment team. Now 18, Vuskovic finally linked up with the first team in July after completing the terms of his move, and manager Thomas Frank quickly gave him opportunities to feature in pre-season, signalling how highly he is valued within the club.
Initially, Tottenham planned to keep the talented teenager with the squad for the 2024/25 campaign. However, Vuskovic expressed a desire to gain regular first-team minutes, and after internal discussions, Spurs sanctioned a season-long loan move to Hamburg, who had just returned to the Bundesliga.
Breakout Season in Germany Draws Dortmund and Leipzig Attention
Since arriving in Germany, Vuskovic has rapidly become one of the league’s standout young performers. The centre-back has already made 10 appearances for HSV, scoring once, and his impressive consistency earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month award in both September and October—a rare achievement for any teenager, let alone one adapting to a new country and league.
Naturally, such performances have not gone unnoticed. Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, two of Europe’s most well-known developers of young talent, are reportedly monitoring his progress closely and have signalled early interest in a potential transfer.
Despite this, sources close to Tottenham insist that a permanent sale is not on the table. Those within the club view Vuskovic as a “future star”, someone who could play a major role in the squad for years to come. As such, Spurs are expected to reject any approaches for a full transfer. Instead, the club plans to use the remainder of the season—and his eventual return to North London—to determine whether he is ready to compete for a first-team role as early as next year.
Vuskovic Speaks on His Development, Loan Spell, and Tottenham Future
The defender’s strong club form has translated to the international stage as well. Earlier this month, Vuskovic earned his first senior start for Croatia, helping his country secure a 3–1 win over the Faroe Islands to confirm their place at the World Cup. The milestone capped what has been a rapid rise for a player who only recently entered adulthood.
While on international duty, Vuskovic discussed his situation candidly.
“I’m happy with everything at HSV. My grades are good, even above expectations,” he said.
“Tottenham? I hear from them, they follow me. They are a good club when it comes to developing young players. I don’t know when I will be back.”
His words highlight both his commitment to improving during his loan spell and his uncertainty about the exact timeline for returning to the Tottenham first team.
Tottenham’s Long-Term Plans and Defensive Future
For the time being, Spurs have no intention of recalling Vuskovic early. His loan at Hamburg is expected to run its full course, giving him the consistent top-flight minutes that would be difficult to guarantee in the Premier League at this stage of his development.
Tottenham’s defensive outlook is also evolving, with speculation surrounding Micky van de Ven’s future amid links to Liverpool. Vuskovic could eventually play a crucial role in reshaping Spurs’ back line, especially given that his contract at the club runs until 2030—a clear indicator of the long-term vision the club has for him.
Although many Bundesliga clubs may be eager to prise him away, all signs suggest that Tottenham view Luka Vuskovic as a central figure in their future plans, rather than a player they are willing to cash in on anytime soon.
