There is a chance”- Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham likely to sign ‘world-class’ star in 2026, he wants to join

1Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update on the future of Joao Palhinha at Tottenham Hotspur, speaking on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast amid the Portuguese midfielder’s impressive start to life in North London.

Palhinha rejoined the Premier League in the summer when Thomas Frank’s Spurs secured his signature on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich, which includes an option to buy worth around £26 million. The move came after a difficult spell in Germany, where the 30-year-old struggled for consistent minutes under Vincent Kompany following his switch from Fulham in 2024.

Since arriving at Tottenham, Palhinha has wasted no time in proving his worth. His commanding presence in midfield and ability to dictate play have made him a standout performer under Frank. The Portuguese international has already scored two vital goals in seven Premier League appearances, including a decisive strike in a memorable 2-0 victory over Manchester City. His form has quickly established him as one of the club’s most influential figures, earning praise from both teammates and supporters.

Romano ‘Quite Optimistic’ About Permanent Move

Speaking about Palhinha’s future, Fabrizio Romano suggested that a permanent deal looks increasingly likely given how well the midfielder has settled into Frank’s system. However, he also noted that Tottenham could explore different routes in their negotiations with Bayern before finalizing the move.

“I think there is a good chance of seeing Palhinha staying at Tottenham in 2026,” Romano said. “Let’s see whether that happens through the option to buy or through a renegotiation with Bayern. It’s still early — we’re only in October — so there’s plenty of time before a final decision is made.”

Romano also emphasized that the general feeling within the club is extremely positive, with all parties satisfied with how the arrangement has worked out so far.

“Internally, the feeling is very positive. Palhinha is happy at Tottenham, and Thomas Frank and the club are also delighted with him. It’s been a very good deal for everyone involved. The next step will be discussions with Bayern in 2026, but for now, the focus is on continuing this strong season.”

The Italian transfer expert added that while it’s too soon to make any definitive statements, the early signs suggest a long-term partnership could be on the horizon.

“The start of this loan deal has been excellent. All sides are more than happy to continue together, so I’d be quite optimistic about it. But it’s a long season, and we’ll have to see how things develop.”

A Midfield Mainstay Under Frank

Since his debut, Palhinha has featured prominently in Frank’s tactical setup, often operating as the defensive anchor who provides balance and composure in midfield. The former Sporting CP man’s leadership and ability to read the game have become vital assets for Spurs, particularly in tight encounters.

So far, Palhinha has made 11 appearances across all competitions, contributing three goals, including a dramatic late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers. His consistency has made him one of Frank’s most trusted players, alongside Pedro Porro and Richarlison, underlining just how integral he has become to Tottenham’s system.

Dubbed “world-class” by several pundits during his time at Fulham, Palhinha’s revival in North London has not only reignited his Premier League career but also positioned him as one of the top-performing midfielders in the league once again.

If he maintains this level of form, Tottenham’s £26 million option could soon look like one of the bargains of the decade, ensuring that Palhinha remains a key figure in the club’s pursuit of domestic and European success under Thomas Frank.
