Tottenham fans rip into ‘worst ever’ starter who was dribbled past three times vs Newcastle
Tottenham Hotspur supporters were left deeply unimpressed with Destiny Udogie’s performance during their 2–2 draw against Newcastle United on 2 December, voicing their frustration after yet another inconsistent display from the young full-back.
Spurs twice had to claw their way back into the match at St James’ Park, producing a laboured and often disjointed performance that did little to inspire confidence. Although the Lilywhites ultimately escaped with a point, the result did little to silence ongoing criticism surrounding the team’s form—and certainly did not cool the pressure on manager Thomas Frank, whose position continues to be debated among sections of the fanbase.
One player who received particularly heavy scrutiny was Udogie. While Cristian Romero’s late heroics prevented Tottenham from suffering a damaging defeat, the Italian defender’s shaky showing on the left side of defence sparked alarm among supporters. Throughout the match, he looked uncertain, struggled to cope with Newcastle’s wide threats, and lacked the sharpness that had previously made him a reliable starter.
Udogie’s dip in form opens the door for Djed Spence
This is far from the first time Udogie’s performances have been questioned this season. Earlier in the campaign, former Watford striker Troy Deeney criticised the 23-year-old, claiming he looked “miles off” the required level. Persistent minor injuries over the past year have clearly disrupted Udogie’s rhythm, and although he has recently returned to the starting lineup, his form has yet to recover.
His outing against Newcastle highlighted these concerns. Udogie won only two of his nine duels, was beaten multiple times down his flank, and struggled to halt the flow of the Magpies’ attacks. In possession, he also looked off the pace—losing the ball 11 times and failing to complete either of his attempted crosses. For a player usually known for his athleticism, energy, and ball-carrying ability, it was a performance well below his usual standards.
These struggles may open the door for Djed Spence to re-enter the conversation for the starting left-back role. Although Spence himself has yet to fully convince since arriving at Tottenham, Udogie’s declining form could give him the opportunity he needs to push for more regular minutes under Frank.
Fans voice growing concerns
Tottenham supporters did not hold back in their criticism after the match. Many expressed concern that Udogie has regressed significantly, with one fan commenting: “It is not a coincidence that this is the worst version of any of these players we have ever seen… Udogie is a shadow of his former self.” Another supporter went even further, saying: “I’d sell him this summer if possible, for sure.”
As Spurs look to stabilize their season and regain momentum, the scrutiny on individual performances—especially from players expected to play key roles—will only intensify. For Udogie, the challenge now will be to rediscover his confidence, prove his worth, and show that this dip in form is only temporary.
