Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou was full of praise for Dominic Solanke following Spurs’ 2-2 draw against Bournemouth at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
The Premier League clash saw Tottenham stage a late comeback after falling behind by two goals, with Son Heung-min securing a crucial equalizer from the penalty spot. Despite the draw, Postecoglou highlighted Solanke’s work ethic and endurance, expressing satisfaction that the English striker completed the full 90 minutes.
Tottenham’s Fightback Against Bournemouth
Bournemouth took the lead just before half-time when Marcus Tavernier capitalized on a precise cross from Milos Kerkez in the 42nd minute, slotting the ball past the Spurs defense. The visitors then doubled their advantage in the 65th minute when Evanilson lifted the ball over Guglielmo Vicario to put Bournemouth in a commanding position.
However, Tottenham responded almost immediately, halving the deficit just two minutes later when Pape Matar Sarr’s attempted cross fortuitously looped over Kepa Arrizabalaga and into the net. Spurs continued to press for an equalizer, and in the 84th minute, Son Heung-min converted from the penalty spot after being brought down by Bournemouth’s goalkeeper.
Postecoglou’s Praise for Solanke
Following the match, Postecoglou was keen to highlight Solanke’s commitment and effort throughout the game. Speaking to Football.London, the Spurs boss said:
“Great for Dom to get 90 minutes today, he’s such a workhorse for us and I’m sure he’ll feel better for that.”
The 27-year-old striker, who arrived from Bournemouth in the summer of 2024 for £55 million, was expected to be a major goal-scoring force for Spurs. He had an outstanding campaign with the Cherries last season, scoring 19 goals and registering three assists in 38 Premier League appearances. However, since his move to North London, Solanke has struggled with injuries, which has disrupted his rhythm and prevented him from consistently showcasing his best form.
Solanke’s Performance Against Bournemouth
Against his former club, Solanke worked tirelessly, pressing high up the pitch and making runs into the channels. However, he found himself isolated at times and lacked the service needed to be a major attacking threat.
According to TottenhamHotspurNews, the striker had just 32 touches throughout the game, with only three occurring inside Bournemouth’s penalty area. This highlights the difficulty he faced in influencing the game in attacking positions.
Despite his limited involvement in front of goal, Solanke’s ability to play the full 90 minutes was an encouraging sign for Tottenham, especially as he continues to build match fitness after recent injury setbacks. With Spurs still pushing for a European qualification spot, Postecoglou will be hoping Solanke can rediscover his clinical touch in the final stretch of the season.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have also been linked with Bournemouth’s young defender Dean Huijsen, as they look to strengthen their squad further.
