The Lilywhites had reportedly identified Bournemouth wonderkid Eli Junior Kroupi as one of their priority targets and were preparing to make a huge move for the highly-rated forward.
However, Spurs have been dealt a crushing blow after Kroupi suffered a serious foot injury that is expected to keep him out for three to four months. The 20-year-old has undergone surgery and has already returned to England from Bournemouth’s pre-season trip to Austria.
The timing could hardly be worse for Tottenham.
According to Graeme Bailey via TEAMtalk, Spurs were reportedly just 24 hours away from submitting an opening bid of around £80 million for Kroupi. Tottenham had apparently received enough encouragement from the player’s camp to push ahead with their plans and were even prepared to increase their offer significantly to test Bournemouth’s resolve.
Now, that blockbuster move appears to have been put on ice.
Despite the setback, Tottenham are reportedly still keeping a close eye on Kroupi and could revisit the situation next summer once the youngster has recovered.
Spurs Must Move Quickly for an Alternative
With the new Premier League season rapidly approaching, Tottenham simply cannot afford to sit around and wait.
If De Zerbi is expected to compete at the highest level, he needs more attacking weapons — and he needs them quickly.
One name reportedly emerging as a potential alternative is Barcelona forward Ferran Torres. The Spain international is believed to be open to a fresh challenge, while Spurs could potentially land him without having to sacrifice a huge portion of their transfer budget.
For Tottenham, this could be the opportunity to turn disappointment into another major piece of business.
