Spurs agrees £60m star’s contract terms as audacious blockbuster deal draws closer

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly received a huge boost in their pursuit of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, with the Dutch international said to have agreed personal terms with the North London club. According to TEAMtalk, Gakpo’s representatives have already reached an agreement with Spurs, while Liverpool have been informed that the attacker is prepared to leave Anfield this summer.

The development could represent one of the biggest attacking moves of Tottenham’s summer transfer window. After investing heavily in defence and midfield, Spurs now appear ready to turn their attention towards transforming their attack under Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham’s interest in Gakpo is understandable. The 27-year-old is capable of operating from the left wing but can also play through the middle, giving De Zerbi the kind of versatility that could make him one of the most important players in the squad.

The situation at Tottenham has made attacking reinforcements particularly important. Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert are currently among the specialist options available on the left flank, while Mohammed Kudus can also cover the position. However, injuries have complicated matters.

Odobert has spent an extended period on the sidelines with a serious knee problem, while Kudus has reportedly been unavailable for more than six months. That leaves Tottenham needing greater depth and experience, particularly with the new Premier League campaign approaching.

Tel has impressed during pre-season and looks like a player with enormous potential. However, Spurs cannot realistically expect the young forward to carry the attacking burden throughout an entire Premier League campaign. Managing his minutes could be crucial to his development, making an experienced player such as Gakpo an extremely attractive option.

Gakpo’s situation at Liverpool could also be driving the potential transfer. The Reds are reportedly working on a deal for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, and the possibility of increased competition for places may have convinced Gakpo that his long-term future could be better elsewhere.

The Dutchman is therefore believed to be open to a move, particularly because Tottenham can offer him the prospect of regular first-team football under De Zerbi.

However, getting Liverpool to agree to the transfer could be the biggest challenge.

Gakpo still has a contract with Liverpool running until 2030, placing the Merseyside club in a powerful negotiating position. Reports suggest Liverpool want more than £60 million for the forward, a valuation that reflects his Premier League experience, versatility and importance.

Tottenham, though, appear ready to meet Liverpool’s demands.

If Spurs do match the asking price, the transfer could move rapidly, especially with personal terms reportedly already agreed. A deal worth more than £60m would underline just how serious Tottenham are about rebuilding their squad and giving De Zerbi the firepower required to compete at a much higher level.

Gakpo is not the only major attacking target on Tottenham’s radar either. Spurs are also reportedly pursuing Manchester City winger Savinho, meaning the club could potentially make two huge additions to its attacking department before the transfer window closes.

This aggressive approach comes after two difficult Premier League campaigns in which Tottenham finished 17th. The club has clearly decided that another season of struggle is unacceptable and has responded by spending heavily across the squad.

Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke have strengthened the defence, while Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have added quality and energy to midfield.

Now, the focus appears to have shifted dramatically towards the attack.

A player like Gakpo could be the statement signing Tottenham need. He already understands the demands of Premier League football, has experience at the highest level and possesses the versatility to operate in several attacking roles.

For De Zerbi, having a forward capable of moving between the wing and central areas could provide greater tactical flexibility. It would also give Tottenham another proven option while allowing younger players such as Tel to develop without overwhelming pressure.

The potential arrival of Gakpo would therefore be far more than simply another expensive signing. It would signal Tottenham’s determination to completely reshape their squad and leave their recent relegation battles firmly behind them.

With personal terms reportedly agreed and Spurs prepared to meet Liverpool’s £60m-plus valuation, attention now turns to whether the two clubs can finalize the transfer.

If Tottenham succeed, Gakpo could become the latest major piece of De Zerbi’s ambitious Spurs rebuild and potentially one of the signings that changes the entire outlook for the club’s upcoming Premier League season.
