Cody Gakpo to Tottenham: Transfer Bombshell Refuses to Go Away
The Cody Gakpo-to-Tottenham transfer saga has taken another dramatic twist, with transfer insider Fabrizio Romano insisting that a move to north London is “still absolutely on” despite growing reports suggesting the deal could be fading away.
Tottenham have already made a statement of intent this summer, moving aggressively in the transfer market to give Roberto De Zerbi the strongest possible squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Six early signings have already arrived, but Spurs appear far from finished, with the club now turning their attention to adding more firepower in attack.
After an extremely difficult previous campaign that saw Tottenham flirt dangerously with another relegation battle before surviving on the final day, the pressure on De Zerbi and the club’s hierarchy is enormous. There is little room for another disastrous season, and that has seemingly encouraged Spurs to continue pursuing major attacking targets.
Among the names at the very top of their wish list are Manchester City’s Savinho and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo. Savinho has been linked with Tottenham for several transfer windows, while Gakpo has now emerged as another potentially explosive target for the north London club.
However, uncertainty surrounding the Gakpo deal intensified after journalist Alex Crook suggested that a transfer may not happen before deadline day.
Crook claimed that Liverpool sources believe Gakpo has enjoyed an impressive pre-season under Andoni Iraola and that the club sees the Dutch forward as someone who can play an important role moving forward. While Gakpo could reportedly be open to Tottenham, Crook indicated that there was currently little expectation that Liverpool would agree to sell.
That appeared to be a major blow to Tottenham.
But then came Romano’s intervention.
According to the respected transfer insider, Spurs have not walked away from the negotiations, and there has been no dramatic collapse behind the scenes. Romano insists conversations between Tottenham and Liverpool remain active, with Gakpo himself open to making the move.
Most importantly for Spurs supporters, Romano stated that personal terms are not a problem.
That could be a huge development.
If the player is genuinely prepared to move to Tottenham, the focus now shifts toward the clubs reaching a financial agreement. And that could prove to be the biggest obstacle of all.
Romano has stressed that the negotiations remain complicated because Liverpool would need to reshape their attacking options if Gakpo leaves. The Reds are reportedly prepared to bring in two wingers, including their major target Bradley Barcola, should Gakpo eventually depart.
That means the situation could become a chain reaction involving multiple clubs and players.
For Tottenham, however, the message from Romano will be music to the ears of supporters who feared the opportunity had completely disappeared.
The transfer window is rapidly approaching its conclusion, meaning every day could be crucial. Spurs cannot afford to waste valuable time if Gakpo is genuinely one of their preferred attacking targets.
Gakpo would also represent a major statement signing. His versatility, experience at the highest level and ability to operate across the forward line would give De Zerbi another dangerous attacking weapon. Tottenham desperately need more goals and creativity, and adding a player of Gakpo’s quality could completely change the complexion of their squad.
The biggest question now is whether Tottenham can convince Liverpool to put a price on the Dutch international and then meet their demands.
For now, Romano’s message is clear: the deal is not dead.
Despite reports suggesting the opposite, Tottenham remain in conversations, Gakpo remains open to the move, and negotiations are continuing.
With less than two weeks remaining in the transfer window, this saga could be heading toward a spectacular finale. Spurs supporters may have to wait a little longer, but the door to Gakpo has clearly not been slammed shut.
And if Tottenham can finally reach an agreement with Liverpool, this could quickly transform from another transfer rumour into one of the biggest attacking deals of their summer.
