Tottenham Hotspur’s summer transfer window has exploded into one of the most ambitious and eye-catching spending sprees in the club’s history, with Roberto De Zerbi showing absolutely no intention of taking his foot off the accelerator.
The Tottenham boss reportedly compared himself to a “shark” earlier in the window when discussing his transfer mentality, and that description is beginning to look more accurate by the day. Once De Zerbi identifies a player he wants, Spurs appear determined to hunt relentlessly until the deal is done.
Savinho has been the perfect example. Tottenham had been monitoring the Brazilian winger for almost a year before eventually agreeing a staggering deal with Manchester City that could rise to £85 million. It was a statement signing and one that immediately demonstrated the scale of De Zerbi’s ambitions.
But Spurs are far from finished.
Omar Marmoush is now on the verge of joining Savinho in making the move from Manchester City to north London. Reports indicate that the Egyptian forward is scheduled to undergo his medical at Hotspur Way on Wednesday, with the transfer expected to move rapidly toward completion.
Fabrizio Romano may have reported the news early, but subsequent reports have strengthened the expectation that Marmoush is heading to N17. The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath reported that the forward would undergo his medical ahead of his Tottenham switch.
The agreement is reportedly worth around £60 million and is structured initially as a loan with an obligation to buy next summer. That means Marmoush would effectively become a permanent Tottenham player once the conditions of the agreement are fulfilled.
Interestingly, earlier speculation suggested Marmoush could have been included in a wider arrangement involving Savinho because of a possible sell-on clause connected to his former club Eintracht Frankfurt. However, reports have since indicated that no such clause exists, meaning the transfers appear to be separate pieces of Tottenham’s aggressive recruitment strategy.
For Spurs supporters, the bigger picture is even more extraordinary.
Once Marmoush’s eventual transfer fee is included, Tottenham’s summer expenditure is reportedly approaching the incredible £400 million mark. The club has smashed its previous spending record and could be on the verge of challenging the biggest transfer-window totals ever recorded by a Premier League side.
And somehow, De Zerbi still wants more.
The Tottenham manager is believed to want three forwards through the door before the transfer deadline, meaning the arrival of Savinho and Marmoush may not represent the end of the attacking revolution.
One name that appears increasingly difficult to land, however, is Cody Gakpo. Spurs have been linked with the Liverpool forward, but Manchester City have now reportedly entered the race, making an already complicated pursuit even more difficult.
Tottenham could therefore turn their attention elsewhere for their final attacking addition. Antonio Nusa remains an exciting possibility, particularly if De Zerbi decides that another natural wide player is required.
Marmoush’s ability to operate centrally gives Spurs additional flexibility, while Savinho provides devastating options out wide. Adding another explosive winger could potentially transform Tottenham’s attack into one of the most dangerous units in the Premier League.
The sheer scale of this rebuild is remarkable. De Zerbi inherited a Tottenham squad that needed significant improvement, and rather than making minor adjustments, he appears to be attempting a complete transformation.
Savinho. Marmoush. Tonali. Defensive reinforcements. More attacking firepower.
Spurs are spending enormous money, but they are also sending an unmistakable message to their rivals: Tottenham are no longer interested in simply competing for the top spots.
They want to become a force again.
And with the transfer deadline approaching, De Zerbi’s “shark” mentality could still produce one final blockbuster surprise. If Spurs unleash one more major signing, this could go down as one of the wildest and most aggressive transfer windows in the club’s history.
