Tottenham’s £85m Savio Gamble Could Be Roberto De Zerbi’s Masterstroke as Spurs Enter a New Era
Tottenham Hotspur have made one of the boldest statements of their summer transfer window by bringing Brazilian winger Savio to N17 from Manchester City. After a lengthy transfer saga, Spurs finally got their man, completing a major attacking reshuffle under Roberto De Zerbi and sending a clear warning to their Premier League rivals.
The deal, reportedly worth around £75 million with a further £10 million in achievable add-ons, represents a huge financial commitment from Tottenham. Yet inside the club, there appears to be a strong belief that Savio is worth every penny.
At just 22 years old, the Brazilian is being viewed as a player with enormous potential, and Tottenham were reportedly unwilling to settle for a cheaper alternative. Spurs wanted Savio, believed he was the perfect fit for De Zerbi’s football and were prepared to pay a premium to make the transfer happen.
The arrival of Savio has become even more significant because of Tottenham’s problems in attack.
Last season’s injury crisis severely damaged Spurs’ options in the final third. Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert suffered ACL ruptures, while Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski were also affected by long-term setbacks. Brennan Johnson had already left the club midway through the previous campaign, leaving Tottenham desperately short of natural options in wide areas.
Suddenly, signing another winger was no longer simply a luxury. It became an absolute necessity.
That is where Savio entered the picture.
Formerly known as Savinho, the Brazilian arrived from Manchester City after struggling to establish himself as a regular starter under Pep Guardiola. His situation became even more difficult following City’s addition of Antoine Semenyo during the January transfer window.
Despite signing a new contract with City last October, Savio’s limited opportunities made a summer departure increasingly logical.
Tottenham saw the situation as an opportunity.

And early signs suggest Spurs may have made the right decision.
Savio wasted virtually no time making his presence felt in North London. On his Tottenham debut against Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup, the winger produced exactly the kind of performance supporters had been hoping to see.
A goal and an assist on his first appearance was a sensational introduction.
For a player arriving with a massive price tag and enormous expectations, it was arguably the perfect way to announce himself.
More importantly, Savio brings qualities Tottenham have desperately lacked. His pace, direct running, ability to beat defenders and creativity give De Zerbi another dangerous weapon in the final third.
The Brazilian can operate on either flank, giving Tottenham greater tactical flexibility while also providing competition for places once injured players begin returning.
His ability to take on defenders could be particularly important for Spurs. Tottenham have often struggled when opponents sit deep and force them to break down a compact defence. A winger capable of receiving the ball, attacking his marker and creating something from nothing could completely change that dynamic.
That is why the £75m fee, potentially rising to £85m, is already becoming one of the biggest talking points surrounding the transfer.
Some may argue that Tottenham paid too much for a player who was not a guaranteed starter at Manchester City.
But Spurs appear to have viewed the situation differently.
They were not simply buying Savio for what he had already achieved. They were investing in what he could become.
At 22, there is still considerable room for development, and working under De Zerbi could give him the platform to reach another level. If he fulfils his enormous potential, the decision to pay a premium could eventually look like a bargain.
Tottenham supporters will now be hoping that Savio’s explosive debut was only the beginning.
With Spurs attempting to build a completely new attacking identity under De Zerbi, the Brazilian could become one of the faces of that transformation.
The pressure will undoubtedly be enormous because of the transfer fee, but Tottenham clearly believe their new winger possesses something special.
And if Savio continues producing performances like his debut, Spurs fans may soon forget the price tag altogether.
