“This Should Worry Spurs Fans” Paul Merson Sounds Huge De Zerbi Alarm After Two Shock Statements

Merson Drops Huge De Zerbi Warning as Tottenham Crisis Threatens to Explode

Tottenham Hotspur may have secured a point against Nottingham Forest, but the mood surrounding Roberto De Zerbi’s reign is already becoming increasingly uncomfortable.

After a summer in which Spurs reportedly spent more than £300 million rebuilding the squad, expectations were understandably enormous. Yet instead of immediately transforming Tottenham into a dominant force, De Zerbi’s side have stumbled out of the blocks, leaving questions about the manager’s methods, the players’ mentality and, perhaps most importantly, the atmosphere behind the scenes.

Now former Arsenal star Paul Merson has delivered a major warning to Tottenham supporters, suggesting they should be genuinely “worried” by De Zerbi’s public criticism of his own players and medical staff.

For Merson, the situation carries echoes of Enzo Maresca’s turbulent spell at Chelsea, particularly after disagreements involving the club’s medical team.

De Zerbi has already questioned Tottenham’s mentality and criticised his forwards following the goalless draw with Nottingham Forest. He also expressed frustration over the medical staff influencing his substitutions.

While managers often have disagreements behind closed doors, Merson believes taking such frustrations into the public arena could be a dangerous development.

“I thought Spurs were fortunate against Nottingham Forest,” Merson said. “But it’s a start for them.”

However, he quickly turned his attention to De Zerbi’s post-match comments.

“Roberto De Zerbi had a go at his forwards after the game. He also had a go at his medical staff for dictating his substitutions. You say that in the dressing room; don’t come out and say it. You need to keep that in-house.”

That, according to Merson, is where the alarm bells should start ringing.

“That would worry me as a Spurs fan. De Zerbi does fall out with people.”

The former Premier League midfielder then brought up Maresca, claiming the Chelsea situation showed just how quickly tensions involving a manager and medical staff can escalate.

“He’s having a go at them – and you saw what happened with Enzo Maresca at Chelsea when he started calling out the medical team for dictating his substitutions. He left a few weeks later.”

Whether Tottenham supporters should genuinely fear a repeat remains uncertain, but Merson’s comments are certain to fuel speculation around De Zerbi’s future.

The Italian manager arrived at Tottenham under enormous pressure after the club endured back-to-back 17th-place Premier League finishes. Spurs then backed him heavily in the transfer market, spending more than £300m in an attempt to dramatically change the squad.

With that level of investment comes pressure.

Tottenham cannot afford another season of disappointment, and every poor result will inevitably increase scrutiny on De Zerbi.

The Nottingham Forest draw was particularly frustrating because Spurs struggled to turn possession into clear-cut opportunities. De Zerbi subsequently criticised his attacking players, but Merson believes the forwards were being unfairly blamed.

“I don’t understand having a go at the forwards,” he added. “They didn’t have 20 chances. It’s not as if the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper was man of the match.”

And Merson has gone even further by lowering expectations for Tottenham this season.

Despite the huge spending spree, he believes fifth place could represent the absolute ceiling for Spurs.

“My problem is the mentality. You don’t come 17th two years on the trot and expect to turn it around in a New York minute,” Merson explained.

His message to Tottenham fans is clear: forget about immediately chasing Arsenal and the Premier League title race.

“Spurs shouldn’t worry about being eight points behind Arsenal – all they’ve got to worry about is who’s fifth, and how many points they’re behind fifth.”

Merson ultimately believes Tottenham are still some distance away from competing with England’s established elite.

“They’re not finishing ahead of Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.”

That prediction is guaranteed to divide Tottenham supporters.

After spending more than £300m, many fans will understandably expect a dramatic improvement. But Merson believes money alone cannot instantly repair the mentality of a team that has struggled badly over the previous two campaigns.

For De Zerbi, the pressure is already building.

The manager now has the enormous task of proving that his public frustrations are simply the emotions of a coach demanding more from his squad — rather than signs of deeper problems developing inside Tottenham.

And with the season still in its early stages, Spurs supporters will be watching every result, every De Zerbi press conference and every decision from the dugout extremely closely.

If Tottenham fail to improve quickly, Merson’s warning could become one of the biggest talking points of the season.
