Why Luca Williams-Barnett Could Be Tottenham’s Surprise Answer to the Mudryk Injury Crisis
Tottenham Hotspur have suffered another frustrating attacking setback with Mykhailo Mudryk expected to miss several games after picking up an ankle injury in training. However, what initially looks like a major blow could give Roberto De Zerbi the perfect opportunity to unleash one of the most exciting young talents emerging from the club’s academy: Luca Williams-Barnett.
Mudryk’s injury has immediately created another problem on the left side of Tottenham’s attack, with Mathys Tel now looking increasingly isolated as the club’s main available option in that position. While Tel has been trusted by De Zerbi from the beginning of the Premier League campaign, his performances have yet to produce the kind of attacking impact Spurs supporters were hoping for.
The Frenchman has started all three Premier League matches but is still waiting for his first goal. His FotMob rating currently stands at just 6.48, while he has created only three chances across those games. His shot-on-target rate of 20 per cent also highlights Tottenham’s lack of cutting edge in the final third.
And that is precisely where Williams-Barnett could enter the picture.
Although the 17-year-old is naturally an attacking midfielder, his pace, creativity, confidence and ability to take on defenders could make him a fascinating option on the left wing. With De Zerbi known for demanding tactical flexibility from his players, Williams-Barnett could potentially offer something completely different from the options currently available to the manager.
Most importantly, the teenager has already produced extraordinary numbers at youth level.
Last season, Williams-Barnett scored seven goals and provided two assists in just six UEFA Youth League appearances, doing so in only 456 minutes. That means he was directly involved in a goal almost every game despite his limited playing time.
His Premier League 2 numbers were equally eye-catching. He recorded 11 goal contributions in 10 matches and finished with an impressive average FotMob rating of 7.91.
Those figures are impossible for Tottenham’s coaching staff to ignore.
One of Williams-Barnett’s biggest strengths is his creativity. He produced 2.72 chances per 90 minutes in Premier League 2, demonstrating an ability to unlock defences and create opportunities rather than simply waiting for chances to arrive.
That could be exactly what Tottenham need right now.
Spurs have shown signs of struggling to produce enough invention in the final third during the opening matches of the season. With Mudryk injured and Xavi Simons unavailable for several months, De Zerbi’s options are becoming increasingly limited.
The Italian manager could therefore be forced into a major decision: continue relying heavily on Tel, or take a calculated gamble on youth.
Williams-Barnett may now be impossible to overlook.
Of course, throwing a 17-year-old straight into Premier League football comes with obvious risks. The intensity, physicality and pressure are completely different from academy football. But Tottenham do not necessarily need to hand him a starting role immediately.
Even introducing him from the bench for 15 or 20 minutes could provide Spurs with something they have been missing — unpredictability.
The youngster’s ability to carry the ball, attack defenders and create chances could completely change the rhythm of a game when Tottenham are struggling to break down an opponent.
So, what other options does De Zerbi have?
Savio could potentially be considered, but the Brazilian has traditionally operated predominantly from the right side, particularly during his time at Manchester City. Moving him across the pitch could therefore create another tactical problem.
Xavi Simons would arguably be another natural option, but his injury means Spurs cannot rely on him in the immediate future.
That leaves Tel as the obvious choice — and Williams-Barnett as the intriguing wildcard.
The Mudryk injury may have arrived at the worst possible time, but it could also open the door to one of Tottenham’s brightest academy prospects.
For Williams-Barnett, this could be the opportunity he has been waiting for.
