Tottenham Hotspur’s impressive 2-0 victory over Chelsea may have given Roberto De Zerbi an important selection dilemma, particularly in the heart of his midfield. While Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali delivered outstanding performances at Stamford Bridge, their partnership could have wider implications for the future of Pape Matar Sarr, who may find it increasingly difficult to secure a regular starting position.
With Spurs investing heavily in their midfield during the summer, competition for places was always expected to increase. However, if Fernandes and Tonali continue to perform at this level, De Zerbi could eventually decide that the pair represent his preferred combination, leaving Sarr fighting for a more limited role.
### Fernandes and Tonali offer the balance Tottenham have been missing
One of the biggest strengths of the Fernandes-Tonali partnership is the balance both players bring to the team.
Fernandes demonstrated his ability to influence matches in and out of possession against Chelsea. His 124 touches, 92 per cent passing accuracy and two chances created highlighted his technical quality, while his five tackles and six recoveries demonstrated that he was equally prepared to contribute defensively.
Tonali, meanwhile, provided the energy and defensive discipline needed to protect the back line. Covering 11.7 kilometres, the Italian constantly moved across the pitch to close spaces, win possession and support his teammates.
Together, they offered De Zerbi a midfield combination capable of controlling possession while remaining aggressive without the ball.
That could be particularly important as Tottenham look to become more consistent under their Italian manager. Rather than relying on individual moments of quality, Spurs need a midfield capable of dictating the tempo, winning second balls and preventing opponents from dominating central areas.
Fernandes and Tonali showed they could provide those qualities against Chelsea.
Pape Matar Sarr has qualities that make him a valuable member of Tottenham’s squad. The Senegalese international is energetic, athletic and capable of carrying the ball forward, while his pressing ability can help Spurs win possession higher up the pitch.
However, the emergence of a convincing partnership between Fernandes and Tonali could make his position more complicated.
Fernandes offers technical security and an ability to progress the ball, while Tonali brings positional discipline and defensive awareness. If De Zerbi believes those attributes provide the best balance for his preferred system, Sarr could struggle to displace either player when they are fully fit.
The biggest concern for Sarr would be the consistency of the competition rather than a lack of ability. Even when a player performs well, he can find himself on the bench if two teammates develop a particularly effective understanding.
At a club seeking to return to the Premier League’s top eight, De Zerbi may increasingly favour players who provide the precise combination of control, tactical discipline and reliability he wants from his midfield.
Sarr would therefore need to demonstrate that he can offer something different, whether through his forward runs, ability to break through opposition lines or contributions in the final third.
Tottenham may have to consider Sarr’s long-term future
If Fernandes and Tonali establish themselves as De Zerbi’s first-choice midfield partnership, Tottenham could eventually face a decision over Sarr’s future.
The Senegalese midfielder may be reluctant to spend his best years regularly coming off the bench, particularly if he believes he is capable of playing an important role elsewhere.
For Tottenham, keeping a talented player of Sarr’s age on the fringes of the starting XI could also raise questions about squad planning. The club must decide whether he remains an important rotation option or whether his value could be better used to strengthen another area of the team.
A departure should not be considered inevitable, however. The demands of a full season, injuries, suspensions and tactical changes mean Tottenham will need more than two reliable midfielders. Sarr’s athleticism could prove valuable in matches that require greater intensity, while his ability to drive forward may offer a different dimension against opponents who defend deep.
Much will depend on how De Zerbi intends to rotate his squad and whether Sarr can adapt his game to the demands of the manager’s system.
De Zerbi now has a major midfield decision to make
Ultimately, Fernandes and Tonali have given Tottenham supporters a glimpse of what their midfield could look like when the team’s expensive signings begin to fulfil their potential.
Their performance against Chelsea suggested that they could complement each other effectively, with Fernandes providing technical control and Tonali offering the defensive protection and relentless work rate needed to maintain the team’s structure.
If they can reproduce that performance consistently, De Zerbi may have little reason to break up the partnership in important matches.
That would inevitably put greater pressure on Sarr to fight for his place and prove that he deserves to remain part of Tottenham’s long-term plans.
For now, the Senegalese midfielder should not be written off. But the message is clear: if Fernandes and Tonali continue to excel together, Sarr may have to accept a reduced role or convince De Zerbi that he can bring something different to the starting XI.
Tottenham need competition throughout the squad if they are serious about climbing the Premier League table. The real challenge for De Zerbi will be finding a way to get the best out of all three midfielders without weakening a partnership that could become central to Spurs’ revival.
