Newcastle Spent £63m on Tottenham Superstar Fabrizio Romano Confirmed Deal
Newcastle United’s search for a new midfield leader is beginning to gather serious momentum as the Magpies prepare for life without Bruno Guimaraes. With the Brazilian midfielder’s impending departure leaving a major void in the centre of the pitch, Newcastle are exploring several options and Tottenham Hotspur youngster Lucas Bergvall has emerged as one of the names attracting significant attention.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Bergvall remains firmly on Newcastle’s shortlist despite the recent managerial changes at St James’ Park. The Sweden international was previously admired by former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, and that interest appears to have survived his departure from the club.
Romano has revealed that Bergvall is still being discussed internally by Newcastle’s recruitment team as the club works alongside new head coach Matthias Jaissle to determine its next major midfield target.
Speaking on the GIVEMESPORT Market Madness podcast, Romano explained that Bergvall is one of several midfielders currently being considered by Newcastle as they assess the best way to strengthen their squad.
“The conversation is ongoing with the coach Matthias Jaissle,” Romano said. “One of the players they appreciated, for example, is Lucas Bergvall. They were looking at him because he might leave Tottenham in the summer transfer window. He’s a player who was already approved by Eddie Howe.”
The comments suggest that Bergvall’s name has not simply been carried over from Newcastle’s previous recruitment plans. Instead, the talented Tottenham midfielder appears to be under fresh consideration as Jaissle begins shaping his own vision for the squad.
Newcastle are expected to hold further recruitment meetings in the coming days, with those discussions likely to determine which midfielder becomes the club’s main priority.
Romano added: “Let’s see now with the new coach, Matthias Jaissle. Over the next two to three days, they will have more meetings and decide which kind of player they want to add to their squad.”
While Bergvall is not currently being described as Newcastle’s only option, Romano believes the club is almost certain to strengthen the midfield department after losing Guimaraes.
“Bergvall could be an option, not the only one, but I’m sure Newcastle will do something in that position because obviously they lost Bruno and they need a top midfielder, so they are working on that for sure.”
Bergvall’s situation at Tottenham has also added another layer of intrigue to the transfer story. Previous reports have suggested that the young midfielder could be considering his future at Spurs as he looks for more consistent first-team football.
The 20-year-old has already attracted attention from several clubs, with Nottingham Forest also reportedly interested in his services. Newcastle, meanwhile, have apparently already tested Tottenham’s resolve with an opening offer, although that proposal was rejected.
The Magpies could still return with an improved bid, but their next move may depend on their financial and accounting situation. Football Insider previously reported that Newcastle were considering delaying another approach for Bergvall until UEFA’s 45-day accounting window linked to Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham expires in mid-August.
Tottenham, however, may not be willing to make it easy for Newcastle.
Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi has publicly praised Bergvall and admitted that he would like the midfielder to remain in north London. At the same time, the Tottenham boss acknowledged that the final decision ultimately belongs to the player.
“I would like that he stays with us. I think he’s potentially a top, top, top player,” De Zerbi said. “But then I don’t want to convince anyone to stay.”
Those comments could prove significant if Newcastle decide to push forward with their interest. Bergvall is viewed as a player with considerable potential, and Newcastle could see him as both an immediate midfield option and a long-term investment.
The Magpies are not short of alternatives, either. Newcastle have been linked with several other midfielders, including Felix Nmecha, Angelo Stiller, Victor Froholdt and experienced former Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
However, Romano’s latest update indicates that Bergvall remains firmly in the conversation as Newcastle prepare to rebuild their midfield following Guimaraes’ impending exit.
For Newcastle, the challenge will be finding a midfielder capable of filling the enormous creative and leadership void left behind by Guimaraes. Bergvall may not offer the exact same profile, but his technical ability, composure and potential could make him an attractive option for a club looking to build for the future.
The coming days could therefore be crucial. With Jaissle now involved in the decision-making process, Newcastle must determine whether Bergvall is the right player to become one of the key pieces of their new-look midfield or whether the club should pursue a more experienced and expensive alternative.
For Tottenham, meanwhile, the situation could become increasingly difficult if Newcastle make a serious approach. Spurs will have to decide whether to keep faith in Bergvall’s long-term potential or consider a significant offer for a player who could command a substantial fee.
With the summer transfer window entering a decisive stage, Lucas Bergvall’s future is certainly one to watch closely. Newcastle’s interest remains alive, Tottenham are aware of the growing speculation, and the midfielder’s next move could become one of the more intriguing transfer stories of the window.
