Tottenham Hotspur are continuing to explore attacking reinforcements during the summer transfer window, and an unexpected development at Crystal Palace could potentially give them an ideal opportunity to revisit their interest in Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Spurs have been admirers of the French striker for some time and have previously made enquiries regarding his situation at Selhurst Park. With Tottenham looking to add more firepower to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad, Mateta could emerge as an attractive option, particularly if his current situation at Palace leads to the club becoming more open to his departure.
The 29-year-old striker started Palace’s opening Premier League fixture against Everton, but it was far from an impressive outing for the Frenchman. Palace suffered defeat, while Mateta struggled to make the desired impact in front of goal.
His recent form aside, however, Mateta has already demonstrated that he can be a reliable Premier League goalscorer. During the 2025/26 campaign, he made 32 league appearances and scored 12 goals, while averaging 2.1 aerial duels won and around two shots per game. His physical presence, ability to occupy defenders and willingness to attack crosses make him a very different proposition from some of Tottenham’s other attacking targets.
Tottenham Looking for More Firepower
Tottenham’s need for additional forwards has become increasingly obvious. The club have been strongly linked with Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush and are also pursuing Savinho as they attempt to give De Zerbi greater quality and depth in the final third.
However, their recruitment is unlikely to end with one attacking signing.
Tottenham’s opening Premier League fixture exposed several weaknesses, particularly in their attacking play, as they suffered a disappointing defeat against Brentford. While bringing in another striker would not automatically resolve all of the team’s problems, having an additional proven goalscorer could give Spurs greater options when games become difficult.
That is where Mateta could potentially come into the picture.
Reports have suggested that Tottenham have already held discussions to establish the striker’s availability, meaning there is at least some groundwork behind their interest. The latest development surrounding Mateta’s contract could now make the situation even more intriguing.
Mateta Takes Contract Situation to FIFA
Shortly after Palace’s defeat against Everton, reports emerged that Mateta had launched an official challenge regarding the validity of the final 10 months of his current contract.
The striker has reportedly taken the matter to FIFA, with Mateta believing that the final year of his Palace agreement is not valid. The dispute concerns the current season and could now become an important factor in determining his future.
Although the contractual disagreement is understood to have been developing for some time, its public emergence could have significant consequences for both the player and Palace.
From the club’s perspective, having a first-team player challenge the validity of his contract is an uncomfortable situation. It also raises questions about Mateta’s long-term commitment to remaining at Selhurst Park.

Marmoush Would Not Necessarily Be the Complete Solution
Tottenham’s pursuit of Marmoush remains one of the major attacking stories surrounding the club, but the Egyptian international may not necessarily be the answer to every problem in De Zerbi’s forward line.
Marmoush is a versatile attacker who can operate through the middle or from wider positions. That flexibility is one of his biggest strengths, but it also means Tottenham may still require a more traditional centre-forward.
There is also uncertainty surrounding Richarlison’s future, with the Brazilian continuing to attract transfer interest. If he were to leave, Spurs would potentially need more than one new attacking player to maintain sufficient depth across a long season.
Mateta offers something different.
Rather than being primarily a versatile forward who likes to drift into different areas, the Palace striker can operate as a traditional focal point. His physical strength allows him to compete with centre-backs, hold the ball up and bring teammates into play, while his aerial ability provides Tottenham with another route to goal.
That could be particularly useful for a Spurs side that may need to find different ways of breaking down stubborn opponents.
Could Mateta Become Tottenham’s Missing Piece?
Signing Mateta alone would not suddenly transform Tottenham into a complete team. Their defeat to Brentford demonstrated that there are still several areas that require improvement, and De Zerbi will need time to implement his ideas.
Nevertheless, adding a proven Premier League striker could provide the squad with an important dimension.
Mateta has already shown that he can score consistently at this level, and his physical profile would complement more mobile attackers such as Marmoush and Savinho. Rather than competing directly with them for the same role, he could potentially give Tottenham an alternative option depending on the opponent and tactical approach.
