TOTTENHAM MAKE ROBERTO DE ZERBI DECISION DESPITE ANOTHER DEFEAT
Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the season has reached another worrying point, but the club has reportedly decided not to sack Roberto De Zerbi — at least for now.
Another match has ended in another defeat for Spurs, and the pressure surrounding the club is beginning to grow. Tottenham suffered a 3-2 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday, leaving supporters frustrated and increasingly concerned about where this season is heading.
For a club that spent heavily during the summer and brought in several new players, the early results have been difficult to accept. Regardless of the money invested, the players recruited or the manager standing on the touchline, Tottenham’s immediate problem remains the same: they are struggling to turn their performances and investment into results.
There was at least one small positive against Aston Villa.
Tottenham finally managed to score in the Premier League after failing to find the net in their opening league matches. However, the goals were not enough to prevent another defeat, and Spurs remain stuck in the relegation zone.
That position has naturally raised questions about De Zerbi’s future.
The Italian manager arrived with significant expectations after Tottenham decided to move in a new direction. The club backed him during the summer transfer window, investing heavily in an attempt to rebuild the squad and give him the players required to implement his footballing philosophy.
But football rarely follows the script.
Despite the considerable spending, Tottenham were unable to complete every transfer they wanted. One of the major targets mentioned was Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, but the player was ultimately unavailable.
Nevertheless, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has indicated that Tottenham’s leadership still believes De Zerbi deserves time to build the team.
According to Romano, the club deliberately backed the manager during the summer because it believed in his ideas and wanted to give him the opportunity to establish his methods. The transfer window may not have delivered every player Tottenham wanted, but the overall investment was still significant.
And that is an important part of the current situation.
Tottenham did not simply spend money without a plan. They backed De Zerbi and expected the process of rebuilding the team to take time.
Romano’s latest comments suggest that there is currently no indication Tottenham are actively searching for a replacement manager.
Instead, the message coming from the club remains one of confidence.
That could come as a surprise to some supporters, particularly given Tottenham’s position in the table. After such a poor beginning, many fans may understandably wonder how long the club can continue to show patience.
But the argument from Tottenham’s side appears to be that the current situation cannot be judged solely by the league table after only a handful of matches.
The club finished last season in a disappointing position and only narrowly avoided a much more serious situation, meaning there was never going to be an instant transformation simply because new players arrived during the summer.
A team cannot completely change its identity overnight.
De Zerbi has new players to integrate, a new system to establish and a squad that still needs time to understand exactly what he wants from them.
That does not mean Tottenham’s current position is acceptable. Sitting in the relegation zone is a serious concern for a club with ambitions of competing near the top of the Premier League.
However, Tottenham appear to believe that changing managers again would not necessarily solve the underlying problems.
The bigger question now is whether De Zerbi can begin producing results before the pressure becomes overwhelming.
Saturday’s defeat to Aston Villa showed both sides of Tottenham’s current situation. They finally found the back of the net in the Premier League, but they still conceded three goals and ultimately walked away with nothing.
For supporters, patience will inevitably have limits.
Every defeat increases the pressure. Every dropped point makes the climb up the table more difficult. And every poor performance will lead to more questions about whether De Zerbi is genuinely the right man to lead this rebuilding project.
For now, however, Tottenham appear determined to stick with their manager.
Romano’s information suggests the club knew from the beginning that this would be a process rather than an instant transformation. Tottenham believe the problems inherited from last season cannot be completely repaired simply by spending heavily in one transfer window.
The challenge for De Zerbi is now clear.
He needs to turn Tottenham’s investment into performances, performances into points and points into a dramatic improvement in their league position.
The next few matches could therefore be extremely important.
Tottenham may still believe in De Zerbi, but football is ultimately judged by results. If Spurs can start winning, the current crisis could quickly begin to look like a difficult opening chapter in a long-term rebuild.
If the defeats continue, however, the pressure surrounding the Italian manager is almost certain to intensify.
For now, De Zerbi remains Tottenham’s man.
The club has chosen patience.
Now it is up to the manager and his players to show that Tottenham’s faith in them is justified.
