Newcastle United are continuing to explore their options in midfield as Matthias Jaissle looks to strengthen his squad before the summer transfer window closes. One name to have emerged on the Magpies’ radar is Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with the club reportedly considering a move for the Spanish international.
Newcastle are understood to have made contact with Manchester City to explore the possibility of a deal worth around £34 million for Gonzalez. The 24-year-old has experience of Premier League football and could offer Jaissle another physically strong option in the heart of midfield.
However, while Gonzalez remains a potential target, Newcastle may have an opportunity to make an even more exciting addition to their midfield if they can persuade Tottenham Hotspur to part ways with Archie Gray.
How Nico Gonzalez Could Fit at Newcastle
Gonzalez joined Manchester City in January 2025 after making a name for himself with Porto, and he has since featured regularly for the Premier League giants. Across his time at the Etihad, the midfielder has made 59 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals but failing to register an assist.
Those numbers indicate that Gonzalez would not necessarily be expected to replicate the attacking influence of a player such as Bruno Guimaraes. Instead, his main strengths lie deeper on the pitch.
The Spaniard is naturally suited to playing as a number six, where he can sit in front of the defence, provide protection to the back four and help control the tempo of matches. His ability to receive possession under pressure and keep the ball moving could make him a useful component of Jaissle’s midfield structure.
Another appealing aspect of Gonzalez is his physicality. His time in English football has already demonstrated that he can cope with the intensity and physical demands of the Premier League. He is capable of competing strongly in both aerial and ground duels, while his positioning allows him to provide an additional layer of protection for the defence.
For Newcastle, that could make him a sensible option if Jaissle is looking for a specialist defensive midfielder who can operate in front of the back line.
Yet Gonzalez’s profile also comes with limitations. He is primarily a holding midfielder, meaning he does not possess the same positional flexibility or attacking upside as some of Newcastle’s other reported targets.
Archie Gray Could Be The Better Option
According to reports from the Daily Mail, Newcastle have also revived their interest in Tottenham midfielder Archie Gray.
The Magpies are believed to be considering several midfield options before the transfer deadline, with Gonzalez among the players under consideration. Gray is another name on their shortlist, although Tottenham are reportedly looking for at least £60 million before they would seriously consider selling the England Under-21 international.
That price tag is significantly higher than the reported £34 million Newcastle could pay for Gonzalez. Nevertheless, Gray could represent the more valuable long-term investment.
At just 20 years of age, the former Leeds United youngster has already demonstrated an extraordinary level of versatility. He has played as a centre-back, defensive midfielder, central midfielder and right-back during his career, gaining valuable experience across several competitions and different tactical systems.
That adaptability could be extremely valuable to Jaissle.
Rather than being restricted to one position, Gray could provide Newcastle with solutions in several areas of the pitch. Injuries, suspensions and tactical changes are inevitable over a long season, and having a player capable of comfortably filling multiple roles would give Jaissle greater flexibility.
His leadership qualities are perhaps even more impressive given his age.
Gray was trusted with the Tottenham captaincy against Brentford on Saturday despite the presence of experienced players, including Premier League and Champions League-winning left-back Andy Robertson. Handing the armband to a 20-year-old highlights the level of trust already placed in him.
Gray has also captained England at various youth levels, including the Under-21s. Those experiences suggest that he possesses the personality and maturity required to become a leader at the highest level.
Gray Offers More Going Forward
Another area where Gray could have an advantage over Gonzalez is his ability to contribute in possession and around the opposition penalty area.
The former Leeds player recorded two goals and two assists from 18 Premier League starts last season, showing that he can contribute more than simply breaking up attacks and recycling possession.
By comparison, Gonzalez has not provided a competitive assist since December 2024 during his time at Porto, underlining the difference between their respective attacking profiles.
That does not mean Gonzalez is an ineffective player. His strengths are simply concentrated in different areas. He is more naturally suited to protecting the defence, winning duels and controlling the deeper areas of midfield.
Gray, meanwhile, offers a much broader skill set.
A Potential Future Captain
Newcastle’s reported interest in Gray could therefore be about much more than simply adding another midfielder to the squad.
At 20, he has plenty of room to develop, while his existing experience means he could potentially make an immediate contribution. His ability to play multiple positions would also allow him to become an important squad player before eventually developing into a regular starter.
Perhaps most importantly, his leadership credentials could make him a potential long-term successor to the likes of Guimaraes as one of Newcastle’s key figures.
If Newcastle are looking for a midfielder who can influence the game defensively, contribute in possession, cover multiple positions and potentially become a future captain, Gray appears to tick more boxes than Gonzalez.
The major obstacle is the price. Tottenham’s reported £60 million valuation would require Newcastle to make a significantly larger investment than the proposed £34 million deal for Gonzalez.
However, if the Magpies have the financial flexibility to pursue both players, strengthening their midfield with Gray and Gonzalez would give Jaissle an impressive range of options.
Gonzalez could provide the specialist defensive presence at the base of midfield, while Gray could operate in several positions and offer greater creativity and long-term potential.
Ultimately, Gonzalez may be the cheaper and more straightforward option, but Gray could prove to be the more valuable signing in the long run. His age, versatility, leadership qualities and ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch make him an especially attractive target for Newcastle as they look to build a midfield capable of competing at the highest level.
