Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a high-profile La Liga midfielder as they prepare for a major squad overhaul this summer. The club is enduring a disappointing season, currently languishing in the lower half of the Premier League table with slim chances of securing European qualification through their league position.
While Spurs still have a shot at earning a European spot via the Europa League, their path requires winning the competition—an uphill battle at this stage. However, with key players returning from injury and a recent victory over Manchester United boosting morale, some optimism remains.
Regardless of whether manager Ange Postecoglou stays or departs, Tottenham are expected to bring in several new players to enhance both quality and depth. One of their reported targets is Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios. The 21-year-old has impressed this season, making 19 La Liga appearances, 18 of them as a starter.
According to Fichajes, Spurs see Barrios as a valuable addition and are prepared to offer £62 million to sign him. However, the midfielder is under contract until 2028, and his release clause stands at £82.8 million, as reported by Estadio Deportivo. Chelsea have also been linked with a potential move for the Spanish talent.
Atletico Madrid currently sit third in the La Liga standings, trailing Barcelona by just one point. When asked about the team’s title chances in December, Barrios told Cadena Ser that he remained confident, emphasizing the squad’s quality and the importance of taking things one game at a time.
A Madrid native and product of Atletico’s academy, Barrios is a fan favorite, making a potential transfer difficult. Spurs would not only need to persuade him to leave his boyhood club but also negotiate a fee significantly lower than his release clause—an obstacle that could complicate their pursuit.
