Alan Shearer tears ‘pathetic’ rips Spurs man to shreds after what he noticed in Tottenham vs Brentfird clash

Tottenham Hotspur endured a nightmare start to their Premier League campaign, suffering a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Roberto De Zerbi’s team looked well below their best throughout the contest, struggling to create meaningful opportunities while repeatedly being exposed by a confident Brentford side.

The defeat was made even more frustrating by the fact that Tottenham had entered the new campaign with renewed optimism following a busy summer transfer window. However, their opening-day performance raised several questions about the manager’s team selection, with Lucas Bergvall among the players who came under particularly heavy scrutiny.

De Zerbi made the bold decision to hand the 20-year-old Swedish midfielder a starting role despite having alternatives available on the bench. Mateus Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur were both named among the substitutes, meaning the Spurs boss had experienced options available if he wanted greater physicality or control in the middle of the pitch.

Unfortunately for De Zerbi, Bergvall failed to justify the manager’s confidence during a difficult opening 45 minutes. He was one of two Tottenham players substituted at half-time as the Italian coach attempted to change the direction of a match that was already slipping away from his side.

Alan Shearer Criticises Bergvall’s Challenge

Bergvall’s most damaging moment came during the build-up to Brentford’s second goal. With Tottenham attempting to deal with pressure from the home side, Bergvall found himself involved in a 50-50 challenge with Mathias Jensen.

Rather than committing himself fully to the challenge, the young midfielder attempted to cleverly roll the ball away from Jensen. The move did not work, however, and Bergvall lost possession.

Jensen was subsequently able to carry the ball forward towards Tottenham’s penalty area before his effort was parried. Vitaly Janelt reacted quickest to the rebound and calmly finished to put Brentford 2-0 ahead.

The incident immediately attracted criticism, with Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer particularly unimpressed by Bergvall’s decision-making.

“I mean, that’s pathetic from Bergvall,” Shearer said, criticising what he viewed as a lack of commitment in the challenge.

The former Newcastle United striker’s assessment reflected the frustration surrounding the midfielder’s contribution at a crucial moment in the match. While Bergvall’s intentions may have been to retain possession through technique, the decision ultimately left Tottenham vulnerable and contributed directly to Brentford extending their advantage.

Bergvall’s Numbers Paint a Difficult Picture

It would be unfair to suggest that Bergvall alone was responsible for Tottenham’s defeat. Spurs were poor collectively, and several players struggled to impose themselves on the game.

Nevertheless, the midfielder’s individual statistics underline just how ineffective his performance was.

According to FotMob, Bergvall created no chances, registered no shots on target and completed only one pass into the final third. He also committed an error that led directly to a goal, while managing just one touch inside Brentford’s penalty area.

His involvement in possession was similarly limited. Bergvall recorded only 27 touches before being replaced at the interval, completed just one successful dribble and was dispossessed once. He also failed to deliver his only attempted cross accurately.

Defensively, the numbers were not much more encouraging. Bergvall won just one tackle and came out on top in only two of his four ground duels, leaving Tottenham without the midfield influence they would have expected from one of their highly rated young players.

De Zerbi Has a Decision to Make

The situation is particularly interesting because De Zerbi had only recently confirmed that Bergvall remains part of his plans at Tottenham despite speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future.

The Swedish international has been viewed as one of the club’s promising young talents, and Spurs have continued to show faith in his development. However, performances such as the one against Brentford could force the coaching staff to reassess how quickly he should be trusted with regular Premier League starts.

Bergvall is still only 20 and should not be judged too harshly on one poor performance. Young midfielders often need time to adapt to the physical and tactical demands of top-level football, particularly when playing in a system that requires them to make quick decisions under pressure.

At the same time, Tottenham are competing with increasingly strong expectations under De Zerbi. The Italian coach cannot afford to select players solely on potential if established alternatives are available and the team is struggling for results.

League Cup Provides Bergvall With a Chance to Respond

Tottenham’s next opportunity to recover comes in the League Cup against Charlton Athletic. The fixture could provide Bergvall with an ideal opportunity to respond positively to his difficult outing at Brentford.

A strong performance could help restore his confidence and remind De Zerbi why he initially trusted him to start the Premier League opener. It could also provide the midfielder with valuable minutes to demonstrate that his Brentford display was simply an off day rather than an indication of a deeper problem.

However, the pressure will increase considerably when Newcastle United arrive in N17 next weekend.

If Bergvall fails to impress against Charlton, De Zerbi may be reluctant to put him straight back into the starting XI for a much more demanding Premier League encounter. With Fernandes and Bentancur pushing for opportunities, competition for midfield places is already fierce.

For now, Bergvall’s Tottenham future does not appear to be in immediate danger. But after a performance that drew strong criticism from Shearer and left plenty of Spurs supporters frustrated, the youngster will need to respond quickly.

The defeat to Brentford was a collective failure from Tottenham, yet Bergvall’s individual error and lack of influence ensured that he became one of the most obvious talking points. His response in the coming matches could therefore play an important role in determining how much trust De Zerbi places in him during the early stages of the season.
