We Believe in Him’ Sandro Tonali Delivers Stunning Roberto De Zerbi Verdict After Tottenham’s 3-0 Disaster

Tonali Fires Warning After Tottenham’s Brentford Disaster as De Zerbi Receives Huge Dressing-Room Backing

Tottenham Hotspur’s nightmare start to the new Premier League season has already raised serious questions around Roberto De Zerbi, but £100 million midfielder Sandro Tonali has delivered a powerful message that could completely change the conversation surrounding the Italian manager.

After Spurs were brutally beaten 3-0 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, pressure immediately began to build around De Zerbi and his ambitious new project. Expectations were enormous following a summer of heavy investment, but Tottenham produced a performance that left supporters deeply frustrated.

Yet, while the defeat has triggered criticism from outside the dressing room, Tonali has made it clear that the players have not lost faith in their manager.

The Italian midfielder has emerged as one of De Zerbi’s strongest defenders, insisting that Tottenham’s transformation cannot happen overnight. According to Tonali, the new manager is not simply trying to change the team’s tactics — he is attempting to rebuild the confidence, unity and spirit of a squad that has suffered through two difficult seasons.

“It’s tough because we lost, but it’s great to see that everyone cares, that everyone is on the same page. So now we just have to work; the only thing to do is stay united,” Tonali said.

Those words could prove hugely significant at a club that has endured two consecutive 17th-place finishes in the Premier League.

Tonali stands firmly behind De Zerbi

Despite the embarrassing result against Brentford, Tonali insists De Zerbi remains completely committed to the Tottenham project.

The midfielder believes the manager is attempting to restore something that has been missing from the squad for several seasons — a genuine team spirit.

“He is giving us a lot—not just me, but all the players,” Tonali explained. “He knows it will be a long process, but he’s 100% positive.”

Tonali’s comments suggest that the players understand exactly what De Zerbi is trying to build. Rather than viewing the Brentford defeat as evidence that the project is failing, the midfielder sees it as a painful lesson at the beginning of a much bigger rebuilding process.

For Spurs supporters desperate for immediate results, however, patience may be difficult.

£100m Tonali also under the microscope

Tonali himself was unable to escape criticism following the Brentford defeat.

Having arrived for a reported £100m fee, the former Newcastle midfielder was expected to provide leadership, composure and control in the centre of the pitch. Instead, he struggled to impose himself as Brentford dominated the game.

The problem, however, was not limited to Tonali.

Tottenham introduced several new faces, including Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke, and the lack of understanding between the new arrivals was obvious.

With so many players still adapting to De Zerbi’s methods, Tottenham looked disjointed and vulnerable throughout the contest.

De Zerbi admits Spurs were nowhere near ready

De Zerbi did not attempt to hide from the disappointing performance.

The Tottenham boss admitted that his team were physically below the required level and acknowledged that there could be no excuses for such a poor display.

“Our physical condition was not at the right level for all players because many came later after the World Cup and there were many new players in the squad and first XI,” De Zerbi explained.

However, the manager knows that fitness alone cannot explain everything.

Tottenham were outplayed, outworked and unable to establish the principles De Zerbi wants to see from his team.

“I am surprised for the result and performance. I knew we were not in the right condition. We can’t find an excuse. I am sorry for the result and performance. We are starting a new project and we couldn’t find the principle,” he said.

Can Tonali help save the project?

The Brentford defeat has undoubtedly increased the pressure on Tottenham, but Tonali’s message could be exactly what De Zerbi needs.

Rather than allowing frustration to divide the squad, the midfielder is demanding unity.

Tottenham’s supporters have seen enough disappointment over the past two seasons, and another campaign of struggle is unlikely to be tolerated. But if De Zerbi can successfully rebuild the mentality of the squad, integrate the new signings and establish his tactical identity, the disastrous night at Brentford could eventually become an important turning point.

For now, Tonali is refusing to panic.

The £100m star believes Spurs must remain together, trust the process and work harder.

After such a painful opening-day defeat, that unity could ultimately determine whether De Zerbi’s Tottenham revolution becomes a spectacular success or another chapter in the club’s recent struggles.
