Tottenham Hotspur are refusing to give up on their pursuit of Cody Gakpo, with the North London club continuing to explore a deal for the Liverpool forward despite making significant additions to their attack this summer.
Spurs have already strengthened their frontline with the arrivals of Manchester City duo Savinho and Omar Marmoush, but their transfer plans appear to go much further. Roberto De Zerbi is keen to build an entirely new-look attacking unit before the transfer window closes, and Tottenham are still determined to bring in another high-profile winger.

Gakpo has emerged as the club’s preferred option for that role. The Netherlands international has reportedly already held discussions with De Zerbi and is understood to be interested in the possibility of moving to North London. His versatility is also viewed as a major attraction, given his ability to operate from the left wing, through the middle or in a more advanced attacking role.
However, Tottenham’s pursuit has become more complicated following Gakpo’s impressive performance for Liverpool in their opening Premier League fixture and new Manchester City’s interest. The 27-year-old started against Newcastle United at St James’ Park and produced an outstanding moment when he found the net with a spectacular long-range strike.
That display could potentially strengthen his position at Liverpool, particularly with Andoni Iraola understood to be a fan of the Dutchman. Nevertheless, Tottenham supporters have been given reason to remain optimistic, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano insisting that Spurs are still actively working on a deal.
Tottenham Could Make Gakpo Move in the Coming Days
Romano has consistently reported throughout the summer that Tottenham want to reshape their attack with two wingers and a centre-forward. With Savinho arriving and Marmoush expected to play as the central striker, Gakpo remains the preferred candidate for the remaining wide position.
According to Romano, personal terms are not expected to be a major obstacle. The more difficult part of the negotiations will be reaching an agreement with Liverpool over the overall transfer fee.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano stressed that Tottenham’s interest in Gakpo remains genuine and that discussions are continuing on both the player and club sides.
The Italian journalist explained that Tottenham are working on the player side while also maintaining negotiations with Liverpool. He suggested that the situation could develop quickly if the two clubs manage to settle on an acceptable fee.
That will undoubtedly encourage Spurs fans, especially with the transfer deadline approaching. Tottenham have already shown a willingness to invest heavily in their squad this summer, and the potential arrival of Gakpo would represent another major statement of intent from De Zerbi and the club’s hierarchy.
Liverpool’s Plans Could Decide Gakpo’s Future

Despite Tottenham’s determination, there is another major factor that could ultimately determine whether Gakpo leaves Anfield.
David Ornstein has provided a more cautious assessment of the situation, revealing that Iraola is particularly fond of the Liverpool forward. This could make it difficult for Tottenham to prise him away if Liverpool fail to secure their preferred replacement.
Liverpool are reportedly prioritising a move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. The Reds are attempting to reach an agreement with the French club, but negotiations have reportedly stalled because of a significant difference in the two sides’ valuations of the player.
Ornstein explained that Liverpool’s decision on Gakpo could be closely linked to the outcome of those negotiations. If the Reds succeed in signing Barcola, Gakpo could be allowed to leave, potentially opening the door for Tottenham to complete their long-standing pursuit.
However, if Liverpool cannot reach an agreement for Barcola, the situation could change dramatically. In that scenario, the Merseyside club would reportedly be comfortable retaining Gakpo, particularly because Iraola appreciates what the forward can bring to his team.
That leaves Tottenham waiting for developments in another transfer negotiation while continuing their own discussions with Liverpool.
Spurs Face a Race Against Time
The situation has created an intriguing transfer battle for Tottenham. On one hand, Spurs appear to have made significant progress in assembling their new-look attack, with Savinho and Marmoush already strengthening De Zerbi’s options. On the other, the club clearly believes Gakpo could provide the final piece needed to transform the frontline.
His ability to play multiple attacking positions would give De Zerbi considerably more tactical flexibility. Gakpo can operate from the left, move centrally or contribute as a forward, making him the kind of versatile attacker capable of fitting into different systems and game plans.
For Liverpool, meanwhile, the decision is likely to depend heavily on whether Barcola arrives from PSG. Should that deal be completed, Tottenham could suddenly find themselves with a much clearer path to Gakpo.
The next few days could therefore prove crucial. Tottenham remain firmly in the race, personal terms are reportedly not considered problematic, and negotiations with Liverpool are continuing.
But until Liverpool secure their preferred replacement, Spurs cannot assume that Gakpo will be made available.
For now, Tottenham supporters have every reason to keep an eye on the situation. Despite the arrivals of Savinho and Marmoush, Gakpo remains firmly on De Zerbi’s radar, and Tottenham could yet make another major move before the transfer window closes. If the clubs can agree on the financial package, a deal for the Liverpool star could move rapidly.
The message from the Tottenham camp appears clear: the pursuit of Gakpo is not over, and the coming days could determine whether the Dutchman becomes the latest major addition to De Zerbi’s new-look Spurs attack.
