Tottenham handed transfer blow as Liverpool make ‘call’ for summer target

Liverpool have reportedly entered the race for highly-rated midfielder Mateus Fernandes, a player who has been strongly linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United throughout the summer transfer window.

Tottenham have already enjoyed an active summer in the market, strengthening several key areas of their squad ahead of the new campaign. However, Spurs could now find themselves facing serious competition if they decide to intensify their pursuit of Fernandes.

The North London club have already secured the arrivals of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers following their respective exits from Liverpool and Bournemouth. Tottenham have also completed the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth around £52 million, underlining their ambition to build a squad capable of challenging on multiple fronts next season.

Despite those additions, Spurs remain keen to strengthen their midfield options, and Fernandes has emerged as one of the names under consideration. The Portuguese international has attracted widespread attention across Europe, with Arsenal and Manchester United also credited with an interest in recent months.

Until now, Liverpool had not been heavily linked with Fernandes. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Merseyside club recently made enquiries regarding the midfielder’s availability.

Speaking on the Born ‘N Red YouTube channel, Romano disclosed that Liverpool contacted West Ham approximately two weeks ago to gather information about the player’s situation, including the potential transfer fee and the conditions of a possible deal.

“I can tell you something that hasn’t been widely reported in recent weeks,” Romano explained.

“Liverpool made a call to understand the situation of Mateus Fernandes at West Ham. They wanted information on the player’s valuation and the conditions of a transfer. However, after that initial contact, there was no official offer and no further negotiations.”

Romano added that several clubs remain interested in Fernandes, making the battle for his signature one of the most intriguing transfer stories of the summer.

“Tottenham and Manchester United are both actively monitoring the situation, and there are a number of clubs involved,” he continued. “The player will not come cheap. The valuation is expected to exceed £85 million, which also suggests Liverpool are exploring midfield reinforcements behind the scenes.”

The reported price tag could prove a significant obstacle for interested clubs, but Fernandes’ age, potential, and performances have convinced many that he is one of the most exciting young midfielders currently available on the market.

Whether Liverpool decide to advance their interest remains unclear. Their initial enquiry indicates admiration for the player, but there has been no indication that they are preparing an immediate bid. Tottenham, meanwhile, could still be in a strong position if they choose to make Fernandes a priority target before the window closes.

While Liverpool continue to assess midfield options, much of the attention around Anfield has focused on the future of Curtis Jones.

The England midfielder has attracted interest from Inter Milan, who are believed to be searching for reinforcements in the centre of the park. The Serie A giants recently tested Liverpool’s resolve with an offer worth around £21.7 million.

However, the proposal was swiftly rejected by the Premier League champions, with club officials viewing the bid as significantly below the player’s market value. Liverpool are reportedly seeking a fee closer to £35 million should they decide to part ways with Jones this summer.
