While pre-season results should always be viewed with caution, the performances have been positive, and the atmosphere surrounding the club feels very different compared to this time last year. Tonali’s introduction has been rather quieter by comparison, although there is little cause for concern.
The Italian international featured during the opening 45 minutes against MK Dons alongside Fernandes but did not travel for the clash against Auckland FC following the demands of a lengthy long-haul journey after international duty.
Even without grabbing the headlines, Tonali showed flashes of the intelligence, passing range and positional awareness that convinced Tottenham to spend such a significant fee on the former Newcastle United midfielder. As fitness levels continue to improve, supporters will expect his influence to grow considerably before the Premier League campaign gets underway.
Beyond the expensive arrivals, pre-season has also provided valuable opportunities for several younger players hoping to establish themselves in the senior squad.
One academy graduate who has particularly caught the eye is central defender Malachi Hardy.

Sunday’s contest itself was hardly packed with excitement, but there were still several encouraging attacking displays.
Manor Solomon looked lively throughout the game, constantly asking questions of the Auckland defence with his direct running and movement.
His early effort forced a save from the goalkeeper before Dane Scarlett reacted quickest to convert the rebound after just 12 minutes, giving Tottenham the breakthrough.
Scarlett, who has spent recent seasons searching for regular opportunities, will no doubt be delighted to get himself on the scoresheet as he continues fighting for a place in De Zerbi’s plans.
Later in the second half, Mathys Tel also showcased his quality with an intelligent assist for Richarlison, whose composed finish wrapped up a comfortable 2-0 victory.
Tel’s pace and creativity have looked increasingly dangerous throughout pre-season, while Richarlison will be pleased to begin rebuilding confidence after an inconsistent campaign.
As impressive as the experienced players have been, however, one teenager has arguably stolen the spotlight.
Luca Williams-Barnett continues to enhance his reputation every time he steps onto the pitch.
The 17-year-old has long been regarded as one of Tottenham’s brightest academy products and has frequently been compared to Arsenal sensation Max Dowman due to his enormous potential.
Those comparisons are beginning to make increasing sense.
Against MK Dons, Williams-Barnett arguably delivered the standout individual performance despite the excitement surrounding Fernandes and Tonali’s debuts.
Operating in a slightly deeper midfield role than usual, he dictated play with remarkable confidence.
The youngster repeatedly drifted away from opponents, carried the ball elegantly through midfield and produced several defence-splitting passes that highlighted both his vision and technical ability.
One particularly delightful pass over the defence released Yang Min-hyeok into space and should have resulted in an assist had the opportunity been converted.
It was the type of creative moment that demonstrated why so many within the club believe he possesses elite-level potential.
Williams-Barnett followed that display with another encouraging performance against Auckland FC.
This time he occupied his preferred number ten role, where he looked completely at home linking play in advanced areas.
His quick combinations around the penalty area regularly opened spaces for teammates, while his willingness to constantly receive possession under pressure impressed once again.
According to football.london journalist Alasdair Gold, the teenager could easily have finished the match with one or even two goals after repeatedly finding himself in dangerous positions.
The statistics further underlined his influence.
Williams-Barnett successfully completed his only attempted dribble, won five of his six duels and registered an impressive five shots during his time on the pitch.
Perhaps most encouraging was his relentless desire to make something happen every time he received the ball.
Rather than simply keeping possession, the academy graduate consistently looked to create chances, attack defenders and drive Tottenham forward.
His fearless approach has quickly made him one of the standout performers of the club’s pre-season schedule.
His emergence also raises an intriguing question regarding Tottenham’s transfer strategy.
Spurs continue to be linked with Bournemouth star Eli Junior Kroupi despite Bournemouth’s reluctance to sanction a sale.
Kroupi enjoyed an outstanding breakthrough Premier League season, scoring 13 league goals as a teenager and establishing himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers.
Now 20 years old, his versatility allows him to operate as a centre-forward, winger or attacking midfielder, making him an attractive option for numerous clubs.
Interestingly, those same qualities are already visible in Williams-Barnett.
Like Kroupi, the Tottenham youngster can comfortably play centrally, operate behind the striker or drift into wide positions.
Both possess exceptional technical ability, creativity and composure beyond their years.
While Kroupi would undoubtedly strengthen Tottenham’s attacking options, Williams-Barnett’s outstanding pre-season displays suggest the club may already have a homegrown talent capable of developing into something equally special.
It remains far too early to make definitive judgments, but Tottenham’s academy graduate is certainly giving De Zerbi plenty to think about.
With experienced signings strengthening the squad, exciting youngsters flourishing and confidence steadily growing, Tottenham’s pre-season has provided supporters with genuine reasons for optimism.
The real challenges will arrive once competitive football begins, but after two encouraging victories, several standout individual performances and the emergence of another exciting academy talent, Spurs appear to be heading into the new season with momentum firmly on their side.
