Fabrizio Romano Reveals Atletico Madrid’s Eye-Catching Bid for Tottenham Captain Cristian Romero

Tottenham Facing Huge Cristian Romero Transfer Twist as Atletico Madrid Prepare Major Bid

Tottenham Hotspur could be heading towards a major defensive shake-up this summer, with club captain Cristian Romero once again at the centre of intense transfer speculation.

The Argentine defender has emerged as one of the most sought-after centre-backs in Europe, and fresh reports suggest Atletico Madrid are now preparing to make a serious move for the Tottenham star.

For Spurs supporters, the latest development could hardly come at a more important time. Romero has established himself as one of the most influential players at the club since arriving in north London, but his future is now looking increasingly uncertain as several European giants circle.

Inter Milan had previously been regarded as the leading contenders to sign the 27-year-old, with the Italian giants reportedly reaching an agreement with Tottenham over a package worth around €40 million (£34m).

However, the deal never progressed to the final stages because Inter were unable to reach an agreement with Romero over personal terms. That failure has seemingly opened the door for Atletico Madrid to launch their own attempt.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Atletico are preparing a bid for Romero which is expected to be broadly in line with the proposal previously put forward by Inter.

The Spanish club are reportedly waiting to complete further player sales before formally presenting their offer to Tottenham. Among those potentially leaving Atletico are Nahuel Molina and Matteo Ruggeri, with the proceeds from those departures potentially helping finance their pursuit of Romero.

Romano wrote on social media: “Atlético Madrid are preparing a bid for Cristian Romero to be submitted after next sales (Molina + possibly Ruggeri).

“Bid to be in line with Inter previous proposal; Inter had €40m package in place with Spurs but nothing done on player side.”

The development could dramatically change the situation surrounding Romero, particularly if more clubs decide to enter the race.

Spurs Could Be Heading Towards a Major Bidding War

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Romero is certainly nothing new.

The Spanish giants were reportedly monitoring the defender last summer, but Tottenham ultimately managed to convince their captain to remain in north London by handing him a new contract.

Romero has since continued to play a major role for Spurs, combining his aggressive defending, physical strength and leadership qualities with his ability to play the ball out from the back.

His importance to Tottenham has been obvious, making any potential departure a major decision for the club.

Yet the situation now appears to have changed considerably.

Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi has reportedly indicated that he could help Romero find another club, adding further fuel to speculation that the Argentine’s time in north London may be coming to an end.

If that is indeed the case, Spurs could find themselves in an extremely strong negotiating position.

Atletico Madrid are not the only heavyweight European club believed to have an interest in Romero. Real Madrid and Barcelona have also previously been linked with the defender, meaning Tottenham could potentially have several clubs competing for his signature.

And that could be excellent news for Spurs from a financial perspective.

Rather than simply accepting the first offer that arrives, Tottenham could potentially use interest from Atletico, Inter and the Spanish giants to drive up Romero’s eventual transfer fee.

The reported €40m package from Inter could therefore become a starting point rather than the final figure.

Romero’s Spurs Chapter Could Be Coming to an End

For Tottenham supporters, however, the financial side of the situation may be less important than the possibility of losing their captain.

Romero has become a central figure at Spurs and has repeatedly demonstrated his importance in big matches. His leadership and experience have made him one of the most recognizable figures in the squad.

Replacing a player of his quality would not be straightforward, particularly if Tottenham are competing on multiple fronts next season.

Nevertheless, if Romero has decided that he wants a new challenge, Spurs may ultimately have little choice but to consider the offers arriving for him.

With Atletico Madrid reportedly preparing a bid and Inter Milan having already shown their willingness to pay around €40m, the race could soon accelerate.

And if Real Madrid or Barcelona decide to make their interest concrete, Tottenham could suddenly find themselves at the centre of one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer battles.

For now, Romero remains a Tottenham player.

But with Atletico Madrid preparing to make their move, his future in north London looks more uncertain than ever — and Spurs could soon face a huge decision over whether to keep their captain or cash in while his market value remains high.
