Tottenham Star Leaves £40M Deal Behind As £57M Move Closes
Barcelona have suffered a major setback in their search for defensive reinforcements after Cristian Romero emerged as the latest high-profile player to move out of their reach. The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back had been strongly linked with a move to Catalonia following Ronald Araújo’s loan departure to Liverpool, but the Argentina international will now be heading to another Spanish club instead.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur and Atlético Madrid have reached a full agreement over a €40 million transfer for Romero. The deal will see the defender leave North London after five seasons and finally secure his long-awaited move to Spain.

Romero had been attracting considerable attention from several clubs, with Barcelona among those who reportedly looked into the possibility of signing him. However, Romano’s latest update indicates that Barça ultimately decided against pushing ahead with the deal, allowing Atlético Madrid to take advantage of the situation and move quickly to secure the experienced centre-back.
The transfer also became possible after Atlético completed the sale of defender Nahuel Molina to AS Roma earlier this week. With the necessary funds and space in their squad, the Madrid club were able to accelerate negotiations with Tottenham and reach an agreement for Romero.
For Barcelona, however, the situation suggests that the club may never have been prepared to make a serious €40 million commitment for the Tottenham defender. While Romero’s name was repeatedly mentioned in connection with the Catalan giants, their decision not to proceed indicates that he was not considered a priority target at that price.
Romero’s departure will nevertheless be a significant moment for Tottenham. The Argentine defender has spent five years in London and established himself as one of the club’s most important defensive figures. His aggressive style, physical strength, ability to play out from the back and experience at international level made him a key player during his time with Spurs.
A move to Atlético Madrid would also represent an exciting new chapter for Romero, giving him the opportunity to continue his career in La Liga while joining a club known for its defensive organisation and competitive mentality.
Barcelona, meanwhile, still have to decide whether they want to bring in another centre-back before the transfer window closes. The Catalan club are reportedly assessing their options rather than rushing into a deal, particularly after deciding not to pursue Romero.
If Hansi Flick eventually decides that another defender is essential, Real Betis centre-back Natan appears to be one of the names highest on Barcelona’s shortlist. The Brazilian defender could therefore become a much more important target in the final weeks of the transfer window.
For now, though, Romero’s future appears to be settled. Barcelona have stepped aside, Atlético Madrid have moved in, and Tottenham are set to receive €40 million for a player who is finally preparing to leave North London for Spain.
